I have been working at Spectrum Health (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice technology, facilities, people and mission. Great providers.

    Cons

A lot of show and not as much results. The department I worked in needed quality improvement, and the other departments needed more knowledge and communication between departments.

    Advice to Management

Stay consistent with values and treat employees better

I have been working at Spectrum Health full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The coworkers are great. I get overtime. The corporation believes in personal growth and supports hiring within. Community projects and opportunities to reduce health care premiums.

    Cons

Required to work weekends and late hours. Too many responsibilities and room for too many errors. Not enough salary. Orientation should be job specific.

    Advice to Management

Better training program. Streamline the processes and eliminate so many people involved in emails. More staff to handle work load. Hire people with experience related to job descriptions.

I have been working at Spectrum Health part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I work on 6N and it's been a wonderful experience -- super helpful and caring staff, coworkers, charge nurses, nursing supervisors.

    Cons

Very, very strict on the employment policies. But the caring and helpful supervisors make up for that.

    Pros

Good benefits. If you are willing to seek out advice, there is always someone there to help you with whatever you need. The HR team is more helpful than anyone gives them credit for, you just need to use their services. Those who work in an office setting for Spectrum have a very comfortable job with great pay.

    Cons

Those who work the more menial jobs (Patient transport, environmental services, supply chain) get treated pretty badly by other employees. The pay is less than industry average for jobs in supply chain and nursing.

    Advice to Management

Pay employees enough that they can't just go across the street and make the same amount if they get fired, and they might last more than 3-6 months.

New management comes in and makes changes to processes that are working well, either to try to get that 1% better efficiency (at the cost of disgruntled employees and complete overhauls of systems that have been in place), or to try to prove their worth to a new company. Some of these work out well, but often they seem like a lot of work for either minimal gain, or, sometimes even a decline in efficiency and productivity.

    Pros

Great benefits (health insurance, tuition reimbursement, continuing education, PTO)
    Fair pay-rates
    Great community
    Ability to move-up

    Cons

On a smaller scale, management played favorites at times
Drive to Grand Rapids for trainings and orientation no matter where your location is
My direct supervisor did not like me to take time off

    Advice to Management

Value your employees when you have them.

I have been working at Spectrum Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Spectrum has great benefits. Tuition reimbursement, easily build PTO, great insurance, low copays and some services are free. If you work for the medical group the flexibility is great

    Cons

If you work for the hospital group, expect minimal flexibility with scheduling and time off. Also have very strict policies that change almost every year. High turn over in PAS. Would avoid that department if possible.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great benefits and diverse staff. Try to be more flexible with hospital staff. Try to keep more people in PAS

I worked at Spectrum Health full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

SH/SHMG/PH is progressive in most areas. Budget supports travel and education outside of MI, which is great for personal growth. PTO, pay, benefits and educational reimbursement is all good.

    Cons

Many in upper leadership are not strong enough and lose their integrity once they get to that level.

    Advice to Management

Continue to push forward to be the best. But in being the best, make sure you are constantly evaluating your leadership to make sure they have not lost the integrity you so looked to and appreciated while they were making their way up in the organization.

I worked at Spectrum Health full-time

    Pros

Fair pay, good time off package. Flexible to an extent

    Cons

It's big business first and a hospital second. If two people say one thing against you to hr, you're done for. Don't make enemies of any two who are friends.

    Advice to Management

Research and get solid evidence before making decisions that affect people's futures.

I worked at Spectrum Health full-time

    Pros

Great people and good company to work for.

    Cons

Pay is relatively low for the industry I was in (non-healthcare field) and for owning Priority Health, the health insurance benefits are very mediocre. The cost has gone up considerably in the last 5-10 years and the quality has gone down.
