I have the flexibility to work at my own pace.

    Cons

I work by contract work so I am never at a Spectrum health building.
    Position does not pay much.

I worked at Spectrum Health part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Friendly atmosphere
Opportunities within to move to another department

    Cons

Poor management and silos create divisions and differing opinions. Policies are interpreted differently in each department. There are too many people at the top who make way too much money and not enough money for the running of the services. Looks are more important than having the correct equipment.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your employees better and upgrade technology

I worked at Spectrum Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great team members, some of the best nurses that I've had an opportunity to work alongside. Doctors genuinely care and are mostly good docs, even though upper administration and upper management is so terrible. Facilities look nice, but equipment is dated and lacking. Most staff direct pt. care staff members are friendly and helpful.

    Cons

Not much room for advancement. Upper management believes they are smarter and better than most employees. I have a masters, so that's a joke. Spectrum looks good from the outside, but internally staffing is terrible, they are always short staffed and it affects pt. safety and quality care. Most times I have felt overworked on the unit and I often feared for the safety of my pts. Protocols are put in place to meet numbers and to look good on paper, they are big on paper pushing and not about fixing the actual problems within department and the organization as a whole.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your veteran nurses and staff. Open your eyes, step on the floor and listen to staff and pt. concerns. You have many valuable team members that are underutilized and that often leave the organization because there is no room for advancement unless you have connections, instead of being based on work ethic, academia, and experience.

    Pros

Nutrition had a great team atmosphere.

    Cons

The higher ranking you get, the less down to earth people are.

    Advice to Management

All the parts of a machine need to be taken care of not just the shiny parts everyone can see.

I have been working at Spectrum Health part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Spectrum offers very flexible hours, great benefits including a retirement plan that matches up to 4% of your salary, and many friendly staff members. They also have excellent community outreach programs that make me proud to say that I am a member of the Spectrum Health nursing team.

    Cons

Spectrum Health is a very large hospital. This can make it difficult to bond with fellow coworkers. However, if an individual works on a specific unit for an extended period of time, they will have plenty of opportunities to bond with coworkers and create a very pleasant social work environment.

    Advice to Management

Spectrum Health has a lot of people in management positions. I really enjoy it when nurse managers/hospital supervisors/ etc find ways to demonstrate appreciation or offer advice to me throughout the year. Over my fourish years working for Spectrum Health, I have had many great experiences with managers that made me feel supported and valued. So my advice would be to keep this up! Go Spectrum Health!

I worked at Spectrum Health (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Compensation is fair if negotiated but also subject to individual management bias.

    Cons

Culture is more of fear and intimidation rather than people focused. Often the mission of the business contradicts treatment of staff.

    Advice to Management

Lead by example. Share more of the wealth with front line staff.
