    Current Employee - General Manager
    Doesn't Recommend

I have been working at Speedway LLC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Speedway has great benefits and high bonus potential for General Managers. They have a strong hire from within preference and have lots of advancement opportunities if you start out as a CSR or Assistant Manager. This is a great opportunity for someone to get General Manager experience who doesn't have many years of experience behind them.

    Cons

Working at Speedway you will see a wide variety of customers. Some are awesome regulars, but so many people will treat you like a second class citizen due to stereotypes around gas station employees. You will have to get familiar with the police in order to report crazy customers damaging property, employee assault, theft, loitering, drug use and sales, etc. This does vary by area but even in nicer areas these are common issues. Most stores are 24/7 and Speedway is extremely reluctant to ever close their doors even in emergencies. Call offs are extremely frequent and management is expected to pick up any shifts regardless of the hour on top of their regular 50 hr work week. There is no work life balance unless you work at an 18 hour store but then the salary and bonuses are not worth it. Expect to get phone calls at any time of day and be required to answer them.

I worked at Speedway LLC full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The pay is great at $9.25/hour, and the work is fairly simple once you get into the routine. The food is quite good as well, and the camaraderie between peers is strong.

    Cons

There were significant issues with the managerial staff, but prominent among them were the poor communication and inconsistency between managers. The aggressive and forceful leadership style of one in particular made it hard to retain staff as turn-over rate was high because people would quit out of frustration. What staff was left were stretched thin to cover the gaps in the schedule, which ultimately burned me and others out. It would have been better if we could have kept enough people to avoid that.
