I have been working at Spencer Gifts full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Dress code is laid back!

    Cons

Regional is very fake and acts like she cares, but doesn’t and you can see it! Wages are way to low for retail! This is not the best place to work!

    Advice to Management

    Don’t work for them!

I worked at Spencer Gifts part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The music in the store was nice. 35% employee discount worked great. No dress-code, so you can wear what you wanted. Really nice customers. Flexibility for students and if you're in high school.

    Cons

Not a lot of training. Not flexibile in terms of scheduling. Management was lacking at my location, and really wasn't educated. Wanted to throw associates under the bus and put too much of their responsibility on the Sales Supervisor and associates. The pay. Our store associates only made $8.50 hourly and got a $0.50 raise after 90 long days. Other stores made almost $10-11 hourly. Lightning Line wasn't that helpful.

    Advice to Management

Hire management that actually HELPS associates and uplifts their team. Stop picking young managers just because they appear hip and trendy and actually pick people with EXPERIENCE who will do their job the right way. Improve responses to the Lightning Line. You can't expect members to report things when there's no one to report to. Think about raising the wage. No one can live off of $8.50.

    Advice to Management

A good stepping stone, but not somewhere to make a career.

I worked at Spencer Gifts full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Fun job, good for people needing a second job, good training and promotion programs, no dress code, invites self-expression for all. I personally enjoyed this job because my higher up management truly cared about our district and I felt closely connected to my DSM and regional management team. There were so many opportunities to advance, but it does take time if you don’t have connections to higher-ups or are in a sparse...

    Cons

Takes time to get promoted, management favorability varies depending on location, highly scrutinized for shrink results, appeals to a low-class demographic. There was a high amount of turnover amongst associates and low-level management.

    Advice to Management

Change it up! Don’t be afraid to change your tactics, policies, and procedures.

I have been working at Spencer Gifts part-time

    Pros

Very accepting, Practically no dress code (just wear clothes), raise after 90 day assessment

    Cons

If you're uncomfortable talking to people about sex toys or their sex life to find out what would work for them that may be a con. Also it does take time to learn about the pierced jewelry but it's also a pro because you have your team to help you learn.

    Advice to Management

Keep being awesome! Make your associates feel appreciated and valued.

I worked at Spencer Gifts part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

No dress code or uniforms, store discount, cool coworkers

    Cons

Management is a joke. Super underpaid in all areas, sometimes worked 50+ hours with no overtime pay, no sick pay for supervisors even though they work manager hours. Store managers gossip and act like they are still in high school. Human Resources doesn’t care about your concerns and neither does your own store.

    Advice to Management

Stop gossiping and making associates come in on their off days to do work for FREE.

I worked at Spencer Gifts part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Laid back, friendly staff, decent starting pay, 30% discount, no dress code

    Cons

If your looking for a 2nd job within the mall. Goodluck. Spencer’s is pretty selfish when it comes to where you work because of “competition”. Can’t work at journeys because they also sell BACKPACKS, earthbound because the sell SALTLAMPS. And obviously Hot Topic. But regardless they’ll probably find a way to throw a fit with anywhere you try to work within the mall. What’s next? Am I not allowed to work at Kay Jewelers...

    Advice to Management

Be a little open minded when it comes to 2nd jobs within the same mall.

Pay, the way that customers are now allowed to treat us, the amount of pressure is put on us to produce good numbers for the add-ons
