I have been working at Spicer Jeffries full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Spicer Jeffries promotes a solid work-life balance by offering flexible daily work schedules around core office hours, even during the busy season (although core hours are expanded).

From January through April the hours increase but the office culture promotes communication and efficiency, which help facilitate a smooth busy season. Employee compensation is above the industry average and the Partners promote individual employee growth as well as the growth of the Firm.

Overall I believe Spicer Jeffries is a great place to work for an individual who is looking to work hard and contribute to the Firm's success as well as their own.

    Cons

Hours during busy season increase to about 55-60 per week.

    Advice to Management

    None

I have been working at Spicer Jeffries full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Compared to other firms in the same industry, there are no pros to Spicer Jeffries.

    Cons

The business model exists simply to but up as much business at the lowest price possible and overwork staff. Anyone with expertise leaves because they won't deal with the sweat shop environment and lack of support from management. Client service suffers as everyone is overloaded with unrealistic workloads and expectations.

    Advice to Management

Impossible to provide any advice as they will never change.

I worked at Spicer Jeffries full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Above average salary, free parking.

    Cons

Below average work environment, intimidating, overly competitive, all the worthwhile employees get out fast. All of the negatives of the big 4 with none of the positives.

    Advice to Management

Don't try to pride yourself on not being like the big 4 when you run on a system of bullying and intimidation.

I worked at Spicer Jeffries full-time

    Pros

Difficult to come up with many pros when compared to every other public accounting firms who all focus on work life balance and employee appreciation.

    Cons

The firm is unable to retain employees past a few years as no one want to stay and deal with the negative environment and cultural factors. A cycle where employees with the most technical knowledge and experience are consistently walking out the door only exacerbates the problems.

I worked at Spicer Jeffries full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Spicer offers the unique opportunity to be hands on with a full financial audit top-to-bottom including financial statement preparation and tax preparation during your first busy season. Not to mention front line exposure to the full spectrum of investment companies, as that is their niche client. For anyone looking to quickly master all aspects of financial audits while simultaneously learning the functions of hedge funds and various other investment firms, Spicer Jeffries is an unmatched experience.

Additionally, the pay is above industry standard for entry-level, they provide plenty of PTO, and you can pretty much count on busy season and year-end bonuses as well as annual raises. If you are pushing for your CPA they provide flexibility and a reimbursement/bonus upon completion. They provide a great work-life balance, especially during that latter half of the year, for which core hours are reduced. They provide independence, you will rarely be micro-managed. This company is growing very quickly and there is room for individuals the move up fast and take on greater responsibilities.

    Cons

Note that is is a smaller to mid-size firm so if you are looking for the Big 4 experience, this is not it. I personally preferred this as you are working closely with everyone in the firm including the partners. You are able to have a say and you will not feel like just another drop in the bucket. It is also not located downtown if that is what you are looking for.

    Advice to Management

Continue to listen to employee feedback. Continue to compensate generously.

    Pros

Good salary, decent bonus, and solid work life balance from May to December.

    Cons

The audit partners are lousy people. They openly talk about firing employees. The tax side is better. Employee turnover is 30-40% per year.

    Pros

The growth of the firm is tremendous. Opportunity for professionals to be promoted exists at many levels. Management pushes employees to their potential. This firm is made for people that want a career not just a job.

The culture has drastically changed in the last couple of years. As a female, I feel like I have a good future here. They listen to my feedback. I have seen many promotions and look forward to mine.

    Cons

The building could be a little warmer. It is hard to complain about the little things, since the overall atmosphere is that of a group of driven professionals.

    Advice to Management

Thank you for treating me as a professional and continue to listen to the staff. The 1/2 day Fridays and other benefits really help.
