I have been working at Sponsors For Educational Opportunity part-time

    Pros

Great team to work with; lots of administrative and instructional support provided. For me personally, this is an ideal part-time position as it allows me to remain connected to young people (as an instructor) - given that I am not longer in the classroom at my regular 9-5

    Cons

There isn't much time to really connect with other educators.

    Pros

Materials and lesson plans are excellent, and are provided for you. Prep work is minimal. Staff is supportive, friendly, and the organization runs very smoothly.

    Cons

It can be difficult at times to make lessons engaging.

    Pros

High expectations of young people in all programs and willing to do what it takes to help them meet those expectations. Flexible and understanding managers who are invested in your success and growth within org. Really nice and passionate people work here

    Cons

some openings are not filled fast enough - sort of understand because better to have role vacant than hire wrong person. this sometimes causes strain on remaining staff but at same time pulls us together

    Advice to Management

figure out how to fill open positions faster

    Pros

There are a lot of organizations dedicated to student equity and college access, but truly none has the results that SEO does. The amount of care and dedication put into their programming is incredible and the results speak for themselves: 100% of SEO Scholars are accepted to college, and 95% graduate. Beyond working with some of the most incredible students in NYC, the staff at SEO is a strong draw. Approachable, intelligent, and beyond dedicated to the program and its students. Management is supportive but also let's you take ownership of your projects and create and make a lasting impact.

Plus the organization is growing at an incredible rate, so they are actively looking for people who can help them continue to raise the bar.

    Cons

People are incredibly dedicated to the work and the students, so work days frequently linger past 6. Initially, I was hesitant about the Tuesday-Saturday schedule that some positions require, but Saturday Academy is a true highlight of my experience. I look forward to spending a full day with the students all week long
