I worked at Sport Chalet part-time

    Pros

Discounts are generous and staff are easy to work with. I enjoyed the flexible hours along with the opportunity to improve sales technique.

    Cons

Customers can be rude at times. Cashiering for over 3 hours gets very boring very fast.

    Advice to Management

Respect employees a little more and be more understanding when customers aren't buying.

I worked at Sport Chalet full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great deals on product, get to talk about what you enjoy doing, get to help out and engage customers who also enjoy what you do. Easy job.

    Cons

Customers can be a real pain but that is retail as a whole. The management here is pretty bad, you end up having good managers get fired or quit for silly reasons as corporate creates unrealistic standards and goals. Then they bring on someone with zero experience and the poor souls suffer.

    Advice to Management

Go back to the way Norbert ran the company. Although good luck with the new investors that took over and will bury this company into the ground and liquidate everything.

    Pros

Make great friends with other employees on the job, management is very sensitive and flexible to your schedule. Great discounts. Management is friendly and fun for the most part, and acknowledge you for your work.

    Cons

Our managers have a lot of pressure from corporate to push unrealistic expectations on us. Sometimes hours can be unpredictable.

    Advice to Management

This is advice to corporate, not store management: Treat your managers and employees with respect and take into account all the work that they do that you don't see. Sometimes sales can be slow but we work ourselves to death trying to sell your products and keep your store in immaculate order. Give management more time in the mornings to take care of the business they need to take care of. Remember the history of Sport Chalet and keep Norbert Olberz values alive in our company. If you don't, you will end up like any other retail store, and that's not what Sport Chalet is about. We stand out from other stores because of excellence in customer service, and our incentive to work hard and make sales for you is respect from you. Respect your store managers and employees, and give them realistic sales goals and deadlines.
