I worked at Sports Authority (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Fun work environment. Having fun selling sporting goods and talking to people about what they do or what activities they were into.

    Cons

Upper management was too concerned with their metrics and not focused enough on repaying debts or undoing horrible decisions that had been starting around 2005. It was sad to see them go out the way they did.

    Advice to Management

Focus on keeping your P&L manageable and not force people who make $8/hour to sell Extended Coverage Plans. Buy good product, train your associates properly and the sales will come. Basic retail.

I have been working at Sports Authority full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great hours, flexible schedules and some of the most amazing people I've worked with. It's very difficult to say goodbye to a company that treated me so well.

    Cons

Bankruptcy is the biggest downfall, other than the occasional griping and complaining from associates toward the management and the job in general. mostly the product of those who didn't enjoy their job.

    Advice to Management

Since the company has dissolved, I just hope that you all bring the same integrity to any other job/career that comes your way, it was a pleasure.

    Pros

Overall the company had decent benefits and pay. I enjoyed working for the company and their commitment to the community. There were plenty of opportunities to get involved with local charities.

    Cons

There were a lot of silos which prevented/inhibited interdepartmental communications. There were flaws in business practices which were known but there was no management support when is came to making changes.

    Advice to Management

To be successful in business we should be flexible and open to process changes. When we say it's always been done this way means we should reevaluate that process.

    Pros

Great company. It's a shame that it is going under. The leadership in the market was great! learned a lot and there was growth potential all time. Took advantage of it while I could and landed several promotions in just under 3 years!

    Cons

Not necessarily a market leader in logistics and technology departments. Better systems in place could have helped the business in many ways. In addition; the organization was just starting to take "training and development" to higher levels in regards to people and leadership.

    Advice to Management

Focus on better technology to keep inline with other retail competition. Logistics and product flow could be maximized in more efficient ways both on a DC and store side.

    Pros

    The people are amazing.
    Great community within the office.
    Room for growth.

    Cons

The only con I would say is when you work swing or late shifts - the entire office is empty but you and a few other people.

    Advice to Management

Wish we would have kept going!
