I have been working at Spotsylvania County Schools full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

If you truly love to teach, no school district is a bad place to be, since it is all about the students.

    Cons

The county has had a budget crisis for years, and salaries and steps will take years, if then, to rebound. Numerous good educators leave for neighboring counties continuously to make higher salaries in order to be able to afford life. The county truly does not care. They would rather higher inexperienced teachers so that they can pay them less.

    Advice to Management

    See above.

I worked at Spotsylvania County Schools full-time

    Pros

    -Supportive Special Education Administration
    -Wonderful families and students
-Most staff is friendly and collaborative, although it is different at each school
-Easy commute if you live within or near the county

    Cons

-Salary is not competitive and you cannot count on raises
-Community (i.e. the county board of supervisors) tends to consist of people who do not support education, so they rarely fully fund the school budget
-Sometimes I feel they would hire anybody off the street to fill sped positions, as long as they had a special education degree

    Advice to Management

I am not sure. I feel the school system does want to improve things for their staff, but because of the lack of support from they county board of supervisors, they do not have adequate funding to appropriately support their staff and students.

I have been working at Spotsylvania County Schools full-time

    Pros

Friendly staff, reasonable working hours (excepting additional duties and report times)

    Cons

Extremely low pay, slow rise in pay scale over several years, pointless meetings and requirements for staff.

    Advice to Management

District-wide meetings need to be essential and relay only what cannot be done through other, various instituted protocols, i.e.- PLC's, TLC's, Building-level meetings, Mentor/Mentee meetings, etc.

Pay staff what they are worth. Your district is FAR below the regional average for teachers and allows little in terms of incentive to stay on.

I have been working at Spotsylvania County Schools full-time

    Pros

Special ed. at central office is helpful and understanding, and encouraging. County specialists are collegial and helpful to teachers.

    Cons

School Principals have ultimate control and may not understand special ed. Principals may require things that run counter to best practices. Principals may require too many extra meetings that do not pertain to special ed.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to support teachers when principals are requiring things that run counter to best practices. Shield special ed. teacher's. work time from being taken up with meetings that are not helpful to them and are not necessary to the job. There are already enough meetings required of special ed. teachers.
