I have been working at Spring Independent School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    -Salary above 50k
    -Benefits
-Time off around holidays and summers

    Cons

-Poor organization that does not communicate expectations clearly
    -District does not support campuses
-Poor professional development compared to other districts for newer teachers
-Discipline is not handled well by the district and though my principal has tried several avenues and solutions to combat this, they are still met with resistance from administration when it comes to implementing these solutions.

    Advice to Management

Support your campuses' initiatives for discipline management. That would at least be a start.

    Pros

Like most teaching jobs, the teachers in general are good people.

    Cons

However the teachers are pretty upset over the whole grade thing that happened last year, and that is the only thing on the admins minds.

    Advice to Management

    Actually be a school

I have been working at Spring Independent School District full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Competitive Pay, Decent Benefits

    Cons

Because it is being audited by TEA the district micromanages everything the teachers do. Also I spend an average of 3 planning periods per week in meetings and 2 to 4 afternoons per week (after school) in required meetings and workshops. We are also required to spend many hours every month running and analyzing and reflecting on data reports about our students and creating and documenting detailed "interventions" for our at risk students.

    Advice to Management

No meetings during teacher's planning periods. Limit after school meetings for teachers to one per week. Reduce our paperwork and data input so that we can focus on teaching, grading, and lesson plans.

I worked at Spring Independent School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Cares about their employees
Even the title one schools receive decent funding
Did a great job of recognizing top teachers for their hard work and dedication

    Cons

Benefits are terrible (Health insurance is not very good. Almost best to get an outside vendor)
Hard to get time off (as with any teaching job)
District is still in early part of restructuring with new superintendent (but he is trying to really make it a top notch one)

    Advice to Management

Overall the plan you have implemented, seems to be working. I am excited to see where this takes your kids in the long haul

    Pros

Great salary and that's about it.

    Cons

    Long hours
    Poor management
    Micromanagement

I've worked as a teacher for a few years previously while wearing jeans and t shirts everyday in my old campus. And guess what? We had way higher scores than the kids here, same demographics. Same poverty, same language barriers, same ethnicity. Instead of focusing on parent involvement and things proven to improve performance, they scrutinize your clothes and whiteboard.

    Advice to Management

Have some faith in those you hire. My principal won't even let us copy anything in the printer unless she and 2 other instructional specialists approve it. So basically, it never gets approved.
