I worked at Spring Independent School District (Less than a year)

    Pros

In spring, the pros were flexible hours, daytime hours, good caseloads and good support from the SLP staff and schools assigned to in the district.

    Cons

The major con to working in Spring ISD was the increase in paperwork. The demands brought about conflict with time to deliver services to the children.

    Advice to Management

Overall, Spring ISD was a good school district with good support for SLPs. I enjoyed the freedom to implement therapy services according to my professional judgement.

    Pros

Staff members are amazing people to work near and are always actively engaged in the children's best interest in attempts to teach and care for them. The Aesop substitute schedule system made placement easy and convenient.

    Cons

Low wages pose a financial imbalance when the teacher has her own children in daycare. High students to teachers ratio can strain the classroom management capacity even for certified teachers subbing for a permanent teacher.

    Advice to Management

Advising subs to dress very professionally and wearing a badge that does not read "substitute" can provide a sub for intermediate school with immediate and prolonged cooperation. The students treat someone who looks like they have come from the district office or as a principal with more attentiveness and appear more disciplined.

I worked at Spring Independent School District (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good support from nursing supervisors.

    Cons

Many schools in this district are very 'clickish' and treat the nurses very poorly.

    Advice to Management

Educate campus staff on the importance of having a healthcare professional on staff for everyone's health and well being.

    Pros

The majority of the students are delightful and respectful. The district is in transition and change is on the way. There is a strong PTO presence which gives great support to its campuses and student bodies.

    Cons

Because of the transition, there were moments of disorganization. The ELA curriculum was quite hard to follow initially and had quite a few missing components. There is no union presence and the administrators know this and get away with unfair practices.

I have been working at Spring Independent School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I appreciate that Spring has certain rules and procedures that transfer to other campuses, so that students know what to do no matter which campus they go to.

    Cons

TEA is very active in Spring at the moment. I believe the ship is sinking and they are scrambling to figure it all out. It makes for a very intense and hostile work environment. Not enough decisions are in consideration of what's best for the students. That should be what the education system is all about.

    Advice to Management

Stay on top of things and not only when TEA is bringing heat. In particular, more attention should be paid to the RTI process and Special Education programs.

I have been working at Spring Independent School District full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Many professional development opportunities, although a bit redundant at times. Good pay, especially for "new" teachers. I love my colleagues though, they keep me sane.

    Cons

Terrible communication campus and district wide, teachers do other people's jobs (subbing for other teachers during the work day, excessive data analysis, etc), very data-driven district where they only seem to care about test scores, SO MUCH MICROMANAGING that you feel like you're walking on eggshells each morning you walk in, inconsistent rules and expectations, no conference time (unless you want to count 30 minutes a week), lack of balance between work and family. The majority of employees feel unappreciated for the hard work we do. Admin don't really know what they're doing (they fake it) and place the responsibility on their teachers. No wonder the district has been audited twice within the last three years I've been here...

    Advice to Management

If you hire credible employees, you should trust and allow them to do their job. Teaching isn't about numbers, but about growth. Unfortunately, it is difficult for staff and students to grow within this district.
