    Pros

    There are a lot of public accounting firms and the tax work is pretty similar, but the people are not. I have been lucky enough to work with some great people here at Squar Milner. As we all know public accounting requires long hours, but when you have partners or managers that thank you and appreciate your extra effort, it makes a huge difference in the office moral. I like the work hard, play hard attitude in our office....

    Although the firm started to 401(k) match this year at 20%, or 25% if you are fully vested of an individual's contribution up to his/her contribution of $2,000, it could be better. Like many firms the bonus is based on billable hours which can be difficult to attain at times and does not take into account non-chargeable contributions such as recruiting, training of staff and interns, marketing, or committee representation.

    Advice to Management

    The firm should consider reexamining their incentive plan.

      Pros

      The people are nice. The environment is more chill than the Big 4 and other mid-tier companies. The hours are also less.

      Cons

      Do not come here. The technology is ancient. The work is easy if you are used to more complex work. For a growing company, they are not taking the time and resources to clean up and reorganize their work allocations.

      Advice to Management

      Make schedules. Make standardized workpapers.

      - Great group of people in this office - The firm invests in resources for professional development as well as resources to assist in day to day work - Compensation seems to be above market - Client portfolio is diverse and provides for opportunities to develop industry specific skill sets by auditing sophisticated and growing client bases - Firm is growing

      - Aggressive chargeable goals - expectations from different partners creates inconsistency in day to day practices - Less opportunity for work travel than other firms

      1. Like any job you take, the cultural fit can be luck of the draw. I consider myself fortunate to work for Managers and Partners who I fit well with, but for some of my former co-workers, the fit was not as great.       The annual bonus is based off billable hours, and some engagements have very small budgets, so it is sometimes difficult to meet the billable hour targets.

      Keep listening to employees and trying to improve. Take a look at the bonus structure, and see how it stacks up to other firms in the industry.
