I worked at Squar Milner for less than a year

    Pros

I had a great time as an intern in Squar Milner's tax department for 3 reasons: 1) I had multiple opportunities to take on meaningful work. I was not doing busy work as an intern. I was able to complete challenging tasks and work on new clients that left the big 4 for us. Many of my peers who interned at other firms did not learn even half of what I did. 2) Everyone I worked with was extremely helpful and friendly....

Busy season can be tough, but welcome to public accounting.

    Pros

good clients and benefits are ok

    Cons

Management gossips and plays favorites. Interacting with the office managing partner is just plain weird. He lacks charisma and empathy. Too many hours during offseason times.

I worked at Squar Milner full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Above-market compensation, paid parking, lots of free food, access to partners, small-firm feel, annual firm trip. Management has asked people to post positive reviews so don't believe all fake reviews.

    Cons

Tech is slow and old. No laptops = no remote work (for associates). 401k match is only $500 a year max if you're fully vested. Bonus is tied to chargeable hours only but there is not an even distribution of work and some offices do not have enough work for you to even hope to get the bonus. People here are miserable and moral is low. Tiny budgets = eat a lot of time.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of desktops, modern firms all use laptops. Purchase more Laserfiche licenses so people don't have issues accessing files. Offer better benefits (better dental, offer firm paid vision, better 401k match). If you're going to offer a bonus tied to chargeable hours, make sure everyone receives enough work to achieve this goal.

I have been working at Squar Milner full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Encourages a social work environment with very cool perks such as annual firm trips to interesting locations (Cabo, New Orleans, Austin, etc.) and various bonding events. There is also room for folks that would rather come into to work and keep to themselves - not too much pressure is placed upon this individual type if production is high. Squar is also participating in a UK exchange program, which is is an amazing...

    Cons

You can't really say Squar is on the leading edge of technology. Tech is a bit behind but upper management is aware and reaches out for suggestions on improvement. The current improvement plan is exciting and ambitious so crossing fingers implementation isn't too rocky.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the communication of the firm's changing environment and growth plans.

I have been working at Squar Milner full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are a lot of public accounting firms and the tax work is pretty similar, but the people are not. I have been lucky enough to work with some great people here at Squar Milner. As we all know public accounting requires long hours, but when you have partners or managers that thank you and appreciate your extra effort, it makes a huge difference in the office moral. I like the work hard, play hard attitude in our office....

    Cons

Although the firm started to 401(k) match this year at 20%, or 25% if you are fully vested of an individual's contribution up to his/her contribution of $2,000, it could be better. Like many firms the bonus is based on billable hours which can be difficult to attain at times and does not take into account non-chargeable contributions such as recruiting, training of staff and interns, marketing, or committee representation.

    Advice to Management

The firm should consider reexamining their incentive plan.

    Squar Milner Response

    November 22, 2016Principal

Managing Partner’s response: I understand why this is important to our employees’ long-term savings plans and accordingly, we have made the decision to match a percentage of our employee’s contributions to the Firm’s 401 (k) plan effective January 1, 2017.

I have been working at Squar Milner full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Growing fast (acquiring more firms), which gives lots of opportunity to those inside to grow within the company.

    Cons

The company offers compensation, benefits, and a cultural atmosphere at low end of average at best within the accounting industry. Upper management wants to be able to say everything is average compared to the market, so they offer the bare minimum to fall in that category but tell employees they have the best of everything. (look around, it is not true). It's all about partners making the $$$, not be the best in the...

I have been working at Squar Milner full-time for less than a year

    Pros

It provides a luxurious work environment.........if you have an office. The mints at the front desk are great, on your way in, and on your way out because those are the only times you'll get to enjoy them!

    Cons

Gossip, politics, and drama. Toxic for your health. Absolutely no work/life balance is provided, which includes the expectations of 70hr work weeks. Horrible health benefits offered, barely any contributions to a 401k, and company won't match your own contribution(s). Truth be told, everyone hates one another there, unless they're part of a cultural or familial clique. The people who work hard, get little to no...

    Advice to Management

Be HUMAN Resources not INHUMAN Resources. Your employees should matter to you, and not by you protecting yourself and setting the presidence that we do not matter. Don't pretend to make your employees feel like everyone is family and cared for when you treat us like trash. You're the epitome of LA LA Land. FAKE FAKE FAKE! I actually feel worse for the clients of this company like, more than employees like myslef....
