I have been working at Squar Milner full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Each year the company throws a Firm Trip around May for an after busy season celebration.

    Cons

Since they’ve grown through mergers and acquisitions the company structure and support is shaky at best. Processes between different offices vary and nothing is standardized. The HR Manager/CFO hires her family and doesn’t take into consideration the actual people that will be affected as long as she “wins”. Management is money centered and expenses for reimbursement are constantly rejected. Company is stickler for “the...

I worked at Squar Milner full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

My team was great "Dream Team". I enjoyed the staff and the partners I worked with on a daily basis. Had a close relationship with the CFO who is also in charge of the administrative department operations. She has a good relationship with each location and has one on one time with her staff when needed. She was a great mentor and easy to talk to without feeling intimidated on any situation. With any conflict, she would...

    Cons

More training on people skills and communication for certain management employees. Some managers are not the right fit for their title.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your team/ department & coworkers with respect, honesty and communication. They are what makes a great team under your umbrella.

I worked at Squar Milner full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Above-market compensation, paid parking, lots of free food, access to partners, small-firm feel, annual firm trip. Management has asked people to post positive reviews so don't believe all fake reviews.

    Cons

Tech is slow and old. No laptops = no remote work (for associates). 401k match is only $500 a year max if you're fully vested. Bonus is tied to chargeable hours only but there is not an even distribution of work and some offices do not have enough work for you to even hope to get the bonus. People here are miserable and moral is low. Tiny budgets = eat a lot of time.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of desktops, modern firms all use laptops. Purchase more Laserfiche licenses so people don't have issues accessing files. Offer better benefits (better dental, offer firm paid vision, better 401k match). If you're going to offer a bonus tied to chargeable hours, make sure everyone receives enough work to achieve this goal.

    Pros

Encourages a social work environment with very cool perks such as annual firm trips to interesting locations (Cabo, New Orleans, Austin, etc.) and various bonding events. There is also room for folks that would rather come into to work and keep to themselves - not too much pressure is placed upon this individual type if production is high. Squar is also participating in a UK exchange program, which is is an amazing...

    Cons

You can't really say Squar is on the leading edge of technology. Tech is a bit behind but upper management is aware and reaches out for suggestions on improvement. The current improvement plan is exciting and ambitious so crossing fingers implementation isn't too rocky.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the communication of the firm's changing environment and growth plans.

    Pros

    - All personnel have great opportunities to advance their careers and grow with the firm. - The firm has a very open and relaxed vibe that allows junior-level staff to mingle with and ask questions of management and partners. - The firm focuses on professional and personal growth along with mentorship which is key for junior-level staff. - This is an extremely diverse firm and very tolerant of people's ideas, suggestions,...

    Cons

No major cons that are worth mentioning. If you want to begin your career in public accounting, expect the typical stresses that come along with it here.

    Advice to Management

You've done a good job so far, but keep focusing on keeping the staff happy (understanding that there are a lot of millennials that are joining your workforce and your conventional ideas of staff attitudes/needs need to continue to evolve).

    Pros

Firm trip after every busy season. Great Benefits. Beautiful View (Encino office). Growth opportunities. The people are the BEST to work with. Totally fun, good-natured individuals.

    Cons

The Encino office does not have a gym, yet the Los Angeles office does :( Also, busy season can get pretty hectic, so that's something you need to embrace when coming to the firm (but really, it's totally worth it).

    Advice to Management

Can we have our snacks back at the Encino office?

I have been working at Squar Milner full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are a lot of public accounting firms and the tax work is pretty similar, but the people are not. I have been lucky enough to work with some great people here at Squar Milner. As we all know public accounting requires long hours, but when you have partners or managers that thank you and appreciate your extra effort, it makes a huge difference in the office moral. I like the work hard, play hard attitude in our office....

    Cons

Although the firm started to 401(k) match this year at 20%, or 25% if you are fully vested of an individual's contribution up to his/her contribution of $2,000, it could be better. Like many firms the bonus is based on billable hours which can be difficult to attain at times and does not take into account non-chargeable contributions such as recruiting, training of staff and interns, marketing, or committee representation.

    Advice to Management

The firm should consider reexamining their incentive plan.

I have been working at Squar Milner full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Plenty of growth opportunities (both in $$ and personal development). There are lots of interesting jobs, and the managers/partners generally listen to you when you ask to be put on a specific type of engagement that is interesting to you. The quality of work the audit practice does is pretty high, and Squar Milner is pretty well known in the So-Cal region. The pay and benefits are pretty competitive to other CPA firms,...

    Cons

The annual bonus is based off billable hours, and some engagements have very small budgets, so it is sometimes difficult to meet the billable hour targets.

    Advice to Management

Keep listening to employees and trying to improve. Take a look at the bonus structure, and see how it stacks up to other firms in the industry.

I have been working at Squar Milner full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

The firm has consistently grown since I joined (both organically and through mergers). Diverse client base, and opportunities to be hands on at all levels. Support from upper management in career growth (Leadership Academy, in-house and outside CPE, mentor program, open door policy with Partners, etc.).
