    Pros

The company started with the Grey family. Knowing the history you understood the passion. It was a fashion house that started as a family business and then got bought out by a corporation, unfortunately.

    Cons

Upper management (Regional/District/VP/CEO) didn't know how to communicate in a professional manner. They also would come on visits and just drill you on your staffs selling performance. Nothing else mattered. No human compassion or ways to at least boost moral & encourage the selling team to feel like what they were doing was valuable. It was all about how they could come waltzing in the doors & intimidate the staff & store management.

    Advice to Management

Work is not all about making money. It's about building relationships with your staff and clients. Without a staff that respects the company they work for, you have nothing.

I worked at St. John Knits full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There weren't a whole lot, mostly the (former) prestige of this company was kind of nice. They occasionally did nice things like flowers on Mother's Day. Overall the company was pretty devoid of anything redeeming. Coworkers were occasionally nice?

    Cons

I came to St John foolishly thinking I could craft my career there. Unfortunately I quickly realized 90% of the staff were "lifers". Meaning they rarely let knew people establish themselves and more often let them go. Their was a really weird atmosphere to this place, one of distrust and fear. I didn't really understand it fully until I noticed how rapidly they would lay people off at the drop of the hat and not even acknowledge it. Completely unfair system as management is salaried but the average employee isn't. Countless times as an hourly employee I was inconvenienced by the salaried staffs coming and going as they pleased. Inconvenienced in that I was late to my lunch (my fault and a bad mark against me) or not given enough time to complete a project (cause no over time ever) there's tons of pointless processes and red tape everywhere you turn, the only justifiable reason is so these old timers can justify their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Kick some of the old dead weight out. Review the managers/departments (although lets face it, that's the entire place) that are constantly hiring and firing, maybe it's not the revolving door of new hires but them always sitting in their offices with the doors closed. Eliminate some of those pointless formalities that make it so difficult to get anything done. Allow all team members involvement in decision making. Assign parking and make more staff salaried.

I have been working at St. John Knits full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits, pay, good product and good clothing allowance

    Cons

Clients are so overwhelmed by the number of times we call them, to the point of where they opt out of being contacted altogether, also you are pushed so hard to connect with your clients to where building a true relationship is nonexistent, and this is why clients aren't compelled to shop with you, but will shop at outlet locations and through the online site. Who wouldn't shop online when you have 60% off sale going year round

    Advice to Management

Quit traveling and wasting all the companies money, get to the stores so that you can understand why business is bad. Do you think Macy's makes phone calls to their clients 100 times a week, no! They are waiting on walk-in traffic just like the rest of us. Forget the days of clients spending $100k a year, you have given them outlet and the online world to shop in, but again wonder why business is so bad. Instead of putting your managers on write-ups you should be working directly with them and giving them ideas on how to improve business, you have been in position for 10+ years but the only thing you can say is how many phone calls did you make today
