I have been working at St. Joseph's Health full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Welcoming, friendly staff. In my experience, the “nurses eat their young” doesn’t apply that heavily here. Then again, most of the nurses on med surg are young and haven’t developed that hunger yet.

    Cons

Resources are not always adequate. It’s not an affluent hospital, so you don’t always have the best resources available. But you get used to it.

    Advice to Management

    Make resources more readily available.

I have been working at St. Joseph's Health full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

St. Joseph's may be on the lower side of pay rate but, over time is plentiful if you want it, health insurance is low, the offer a 403b with contribution, paid vacation, extended sick leave, health and wellness bonuses, tuition reimbursement, I can go on and on. The benefits are there you just have to utilize them.

    Cons

As in most hospitals sometimes overworked.
No way to move up the ladder unless you advance degrees.

    I worked at St. Joseph's Health full-time

    Pros

Work on your own without being micro managed.

    Cons

Does not take the time to train new employees and when help is needed manager and colleagues complain when asking for it.

    Advice to Management

Take some time to train new employees as well as the old, there are no protocols to follow everyone is told each something different. Nobody knows what’s right or wrong. As a team they are unable to work together because of the lack of communication.

I have been working at St. Joseph's Health full-time

    Pros

I work with the some of the greatest and most genuine people and that's about it

    Cons

Salary is awful, benefits are lame, no pension, no respect for support staff. So top heavy on the executive level we are going to fall over into the hole they are digging

    Advice to Management

Start taking care of your employees, take your heads out of your cell phones and take a look around...everyone is miserable. Leave the politics at the curb.

I have been working at St. Joseph's Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Team work, RNs, PCAs, Environmental, Doctors, Residents- we all work together to get the job done, to provide the best care possible. Healthy/respectful PCA to RN and RN to MD relationships.

    Cons

Limited resources. No pay raises. High turn over. Institutional debt. Catholic hospital- but no holiday pay for Catholic holidays (Easter, Good Friday). No room for growth and limited opportunities to advance. No union.

    Advice to Management

Certain managers are very limiting to the advancement of their employees. One in particular goes as far to slanders employees names internally to other hiring mangers to block transfers. It has been done on many occasions over years and it has resulted in high turnovers and low morale on the unit. Also, she tends to hire staff who are of a certain decent, and holds those who aren't to different standards. This creates a hostile environment and high turnover. It reflects poorly on the spirit of Saint Joseph's hospital and is not in line with the Christian teaching of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Please hire unit managers who truly care for their nurses, PCAs and other ancillary staff equally.
