I worked at St. Jude Medical (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great technology platform and cutting edge research and a fantastic technical service team. Pays very well, especially to young, out of college employees.

    Cons

Now having experienced working with strong people leaders in other fields, my time with SJM proved to have weak professional development support from upper management, especially for females. Expressing desire to explore different avenues within the company frequently fell on deaf ears, or was met with resistance and chastising. There was also a serious lack of communication between HR and the employee, and certainly no confidentiality between those two parties. Not sure on whose behalf the HR team works... the employee or the employer?

    Cons

Not enough supervision on manufacturing floor. Team leads need more training. Too much playing favorites and goofing around.

    Advice to Management

Look for the real talent and experience and quit playing faves.

I have been working at St. Jude Medical full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They hire talented people with great qualifications. They have great products, which are novel medical technology that treat some of the most common diseases on earth.

    Cons

Top heavy management. Culture of favoritism and not challenging authority. Weak commitment to employee training and process development with continuous improvement.

    Advice to Management

Stop managing by spreadsheets and realize if you hire good people, make good decisions, and invest in employee development, your stock price will soar.

I have been working at St. Jude Medical (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great products and new product development pipeline, great people in my local group, mid-level management is getting better, and the benefits are decent, particularly the medical insurance. Currently there is a decent opportunity for overtime, which makes up for the lower hourly wage rate.

    Cons

Behind other similar companies in 401k match, training opportunities and career growth. No pension plan. No salary transparency. Poor annual raises, which don't keep pace with inflation + increased benefit costs. Their "merit increase" system guarantees that the wage increase difference between a high performer and a middling performer is about 1%, giving little to no incentive to work any harder than you have to and making the annual review process a giant waste of everyone's time.

    Advice to Management

Adopt Abbott's pension plan for legacy SJM employees!

I have been working at St. Jude Medical full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

competitive pay, good co-workers, management styles seems to be changing for the better,

    Cons

impossible project deadlines, pressure to work weekends towards the end of projects to make up for lack of planning, very little useful information trickling down from management about the future direction of the company.

    Advice to Management

clarify company goals and put real work behind planning to get realistic project deadlines.

Great people. Flexible hours and ability to work from home if needed.

    Cons

Upper leadership team was going through transition and new team was cutting projects. Not a stable environment for contractors.

    Advice to Management

Solidify priority work and stabilize the work environment.

I worked at St. Jude Medical full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits were excellent and lots of potential for other job opportunities

    Cons

Management poor selection of managers- need to protect your employees against prejudism.

    Advice to Management

Foreign managers are obviously very prejudiced and HR are so oblivious to this fact. If more than 3 employees are being kicked out of the department due to this new foreign manager - investigation should be done. HR & Upper Management has no protections for employees unfair treatment.

I have been working at St. Jude Medical full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There's no doubt the products St. Jude offers are world class and do change lives for the better. Providing, in most cases, a final and last resort decision of patients and doctors to improve the lives of those who suffer from chronic and debilitating pain and suffering. With the upcoming acquisition of Abbott Labs now in the final stages, this will no doubt further improve and better treat millions worldwide from many of these life altering diseases.

    Cons

Given my statement in the "Pros" section, I really cannot commend the management in how they conduct business within the company, at least at the Plano,TX. facility. We have many key engineers and managers from all levels who are not only power hungry but very untalented and are only concerned with their reputation and not for the good of the company and their employees. They love they money, bonuses, and their superficial titles but do not step up to the plate to do their part to make St. Jude a better work enviroment buy rather pass the buck onto others then reaping the rewards of those individuals to make themselves look better. Double standards and favoritism is the name of the game here in the "Good Old Boys" club to get promoted. Funny when management makes an error they conveniently sweep it under the rug, down play it or try to blame production. But when production, quality, or Eng tech support makes an error, folks lose their jobs. (Witch Hunt mentality). The salaries for the non salaried employees are embarrassing and not competitive with their counter parts in the same industry. The majority of these employees are contractors and minority's to which they mistreat, under pay and take advantage, manipulate to their advantage because they know they can get away with it with no repercussions from them because many of them need their jobs and will not speak up in fear of losing their jobs.
Having said this, many will stay just to see what will Abbott bring to the table in 2017 in hopes that a lot of this mismanagement will improve as well as the work enviroment for the employees. We not only need professional and truly talented management, but also fair and compassionate management towards their greatest assets....the work horses of the company...Production, Quality, and Eng tech employees. Without us, your products will not come to reality. This is a wonderful company to work for, but Abbott must clean house in order to keep good employees and stay competitive forthcoming.

    Advice to Management

Abbott Labs must clean house in order to improve moral within.
