      Great people, just Bad managers

      Pros

Great place for a young engineer to start his/her career. Amazingly nice and helpful people. Management knows your strength and will give you projects based on them.

      Cons

Lack of clear deadlines from upper management or lack of communication of those deadlines, so it's hard to plan project accordingly. Lack of employee growth within the company Lack of proper project prioritization Lack of motivation from management Extremely political environment: all about who you know if you want to move up or move out and not based on your qualifications lack of employee appreciation No work-life balance: the norm has become 10+ work hours, weekends, bring laptop home every night, answer work-related texts during personal time, work through company shutdown, taking vacation reflects badly on you

      Good Company

      Pros

Strong process, efficient business structure and system Focus on continuous employee training and decent benefit They really try hard to keep their employees and avoid unnecessary layoff during the recession unless they absolutely have to.

      Cons

People can be quite type A here, depend on which group you interact on a daily basis they can be very direct and cut-throat, especially the upper management. They have no issue sending you as the scapegoat. Career advancement can be limited due to it being a large company

Good place to get into the field, crappy management.

      Pros

Benefits are good, few good people to work for, good work-life balance for the most part.

      Cons

They are Re-Active environment; it takes some type of event to make changes. Management is on a revolving door, upper management doesn't have a clear idea whats going on and lack clear vision. Seems like they give out Sr. Titles to anyone, however if your a good worker and don't have that title it takes time to move up. To much upper management to get a clear direction. To much politics involved, back stabbing in management as well. CIO keeps creating more and more silo's to match the business, however its all redundant and not needed and huge waste of money.

      Going in the wrong direction

      Pros

Half decent benefits, but they were going to require mandatory time off over Christmas (4+ days of PTO) so vacation time is not yours to use as you please. Incredibly talented and hard working people are employed there but they are not empowered to think for themselves.

      Cons

The down-hill spiral in moral is accelerating. There's little to no communication between upper management and the rest of the department except to dictate company wide communications. So many people have left in the last year it is alarming but upper management is applying bandaid fixes and not addressing the core reason people are leaving...we are no longer treated as humans but as commodities to be traded and used (in part due to the shared services model implemented last year). In addition, few people are being replaced so the project teams are too lean to successfully accomplish the work required, much less do it well. There is no work/life balance especially for those in low to middle management.

      Miss the old St. Jude...

      Pros

Pay is pretty good, hard working employees, great products.

      Cons

It seems we are always trying to catch up, never on top of things. There have been many reorganizations and we've lost so many dedicated employees. It seems like employees are burned out and doing too much work - trying to keep up with demand instead of being innovative and efficient. I feel we have great upper management, but middle management is very poor.

Has been good, but at a tipping point now - will either be a great place to work in a year or far below average.

      Pros

There are many great managers working here. Many smart, capable, friendly coworkers. Medical devices - a chance to create something to help someone. Very respected company, with a lot of growth. Most parts of the benefits package are great.

      Cons

Upper management, at this location, handles anxiety with micromanaging and constant redirection of resources - trying to put out fires. Little acknowledgement, in practice, of the "Quality, Time, Cost - pick two" concept. Overburdening procedures (even for a Medical company) Outdated vacation policy - fewer days than most places.

      Product Surveillance

      Pros

      Great people to work with.

      Cons

      - Lower pay compared to ALL other medical device companies. - Not only is upper management disorganized, there is no defined set criteria (mainly due to the new director). - Choose favorites without recognizing performance. - Allocation of money is horribly spent by increasing temporary positions with an intent to use and fire after contract duration. - Reporting criteria is archaic and is not abiding by modern CFR regulatory regulations. - Job is highly stressful with minimal pay. - Literally have to fake it to make it. I highly recommend finding another career opportunity elsewhere.

      Decent company. Little management support

      Pros

Great technology platform and cutting edge research and a fantastic technical service team. Pays very well, especially to young, out of college employees.

      Cons

Now having experienced working with strong people leaders in other fields, my time with SJM proved to have weak professional development support from upper management, especially for females. Expressing desire to explore different avenues within the company frequently fell on deaf ears, or was met with resistance and chastising. There was also a serious lack of communication between HR and the employee, and certainly no confidentiality between those two parties. Not sure on whose behalf the HR team works... the employee or the employer?

      Great culture, but unorganized

      Pros

SJM is a very technical company with great products; their CRM devices are the most programmable devices on the market. They have great people in management and in house.

      Cons

Across the industry, salaries and commissions are decreasing rapidly--especially for the TSS role. For SJM specifically, communication is poor between upper management and the field.
