I worked at St. Mary's Medical Center (West Virginia) part-time

    Pros

They have creative arts therapies and mindfulness/meditation for the adolescent patients.

    Cons

Did not receive proper support or supervision in this role. Many of the employees seemed burnt out or jaded.
The adolescents who were 5150'd had worksheets to improve their mental health and or knowledge around psychoeducation. There should have been more regulated and cohesive groups to support the kids with the material of these worksheets as they were VERY heavy; and who knows how well the kids could read (seeing that most were homeless, fostered, etc.)

    Advice to Management

Support staff inside the unit; be more present (physically). Interaction with the families and adolescents so they feel more supported during these difficult times

I have been working at St. Mary's Medical Center (West Virginia) full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Flexible schedule
    decent pay
Medical Center pays for insurance premium.

    Cons

Health insurance requires all labs, scans, and tests to be done there generally unless you get an approved exception or have an emergency.

Have to work night shift sometimes.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff about why people are leaving and make changes.

Don't discourage possible formation of a nurses union.

    Pros

Great employees that easily become family. I never had a year without some kind of raise. Never paid for insurance.

    Cons

There was little room for advancement outside of nursing. Great ideas were never pursued if a senior leader couldn't take credit.

    Advice to Management

Choose your leaders better. Using the adage "they have a higher degree" is how you run great employees off when a promotion is being sought-after.

I worked at St. Mary's Medical Center (West Virginia) (More than a year)

    Pros

Its a fulltime job with benefits.

    Cons

Nurse to patient ratio is high!!!! Management wants more out of nurses each day. Nurse managers have poor people-skills.

    Advice to Management

Reduce nurse to patient ratio. Train nurse managers to better treat nurses.

    Pros

Great coworkers, decent benefits and staffing, decent pay for the area. Management is fair. Administration does emphasize quality care, morals and values

    Cons

Staffing and salaries have decreased over the years. Cafeteria is terrible and overpriced. Recent merger with Cabell was secretive and felt very shady.

    Advice to Management

Recognize good employees financially. Spirit of St Marys award is nice but increased salary would be better. The difference in annual pay raise for an exceptional employee and a poor employee is around 1/2%. After working very hard for several years with piles of positive patient comments, piles of comments from other employees as to my quality of work and lots of recognition in the form of awards etc. I was given my typical 2.5% raise. Found out the laziest employees I know all got 2% or more. Very discouraging.
