I have been working at St. Vincent's Hospital full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good vision of service to the poor and healing the mind, body, and soul. Not hard to get hired compared to other places/ willing to give you a chance. Payroll deduction for cafeteria. Flexible if you need time off. Management is not too bad compared to other hospitals. Job stability. Must do something really foolish to get fired.

    Cons

Nurses can be cliquish! Pay is the lowest compared to other hospitals in the city. Hard to advance beyond charge nurse unless you kiss up to people. Management will throw you under the bus. Too catering to families to the point where it's difficult for nurses to do their jobs. 24-hr visitation in the ICUs. Scheduling is not as flexible as they claim (work extra holidays, 20 Sundays out of the year for night shift,etc)...

    Advice to Management

Be more flexible with employee scheduling. Increase the pay rate to compete with other hospitals and stop wanting your employees to always do more for less. And realize that the reason your employees are leaving has little to do with the orientation process, and more to do with the lesser pay and your cliquish older nurses who have been there for a while making the newer people feel intimidated and at times un-welcomed...

I worked at St. Vincent's Hospital full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Nurses award rate is the same across Victoria

    Cons

The most poisonous place I have ever worked. Blame culture. Bullying of experienced nurses to new nurses. Older nurses eating their young. - Most of the seniors have been there for more than 10 years without improvements. Promotion goes to favorites even with no post-graduate certificate/diploma/masters. - Financial issues as they are counting the nurse: patient ratio. Unsafe practice. too much pressure and workload...

    Advice to Management

    - Political challenges. - Extremely poor Management.

I worked at St. Vincent's Hospital full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

If you are a Registered Nurse (Div 1) then St Vincent's hospital is a great place to work. There are no double shifts and no overtime as a matter of policy. I worked here for 10 years and rarely were we ever short staffed on a shift. There are lots of staff benefits that you can also benefit if you dig deep into the website including a 24 hour gym, great salary packaging, and transport concessions.

    Cons

Often it can be extremely difficult to find basic resources and conusmeables. The place really does run of the smell of an oily rag. Be careful of which ward you work on. Some wards are much more team spirited than others. Parking is expensive.
