    Pros

This company in it's heyday was the best company to work for. It maintained the close network and relationships found in smaller, family owned businesses, but had the financial backing of it's new owner Sears. They employed an amazing staff that was full of personality and happy to be working for such a great company.

    Cons

Sears has run this profitable business into the ground. Management has zero decision making capability, employees feel like numbers rather than humans, the database system is counter-intuitive, and sales has little to no support in getting customers walking through the door. And pretty much everyone who works there hates their job.

    Advice to Management

Until Sears decides to cut their losses and sell back to a private owner, they will never recover and the company will continue to fail.

I worked at Standards of Excellence full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They were great at the beginning, but the problem is that everyone is so overworked and burned because the lack of defined procedures that it causes frequent conflicts between the showrooms and the corporate offices.

They don't have standard operating procedures. It's really difficult to get anything done there because there is so much disagreement.

In this environment, you're dealing with big personalities that do play a role in company dynamics.

    Cons

It's true: the favoritism, the lack collaboration and awful systems. Management spent years determining whether to switch systems, but ultimately decided to keep the same one. No one uses JD Edwards anymore.

You'll also find that they give you many unrelated jobs in addition to the one you're already doing.

I was doing the job of 4 different people while working there for the same pay.

These guys are a sinking ship.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people and listen to what employees are saying.

    Pros

Part of SEARS so you get employee discounts

    Cons

At time, there was poor and misguided leadership.

    Advice to Management

    Understand your target market

    Pros

I had a great boss. Lots of great people work here and everyone I've needed help from has been supportive.

    Cons

Their system is completely outdated. Then when they get feedback from staff on how to improve or asking for a better division of work, management came back with basically the opposite of improvement.

    Advice to Management

Hopefully better systems are put in place, I know there's a lot of talk about a completely new software but that probably won't come into play for another year or so. So work with what you have and listen to your employees.

I worked at Standards of Excellence full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Gained industry experience I use at my current position
Gained computer skills since no one knew how to use the new computer system, I had to write SOP docs as an admin...

    Cons

Was a good company at one point, purchased by Sears, then new management at the end caused Standards of Excellence South to close. No growth. Eliminated multiple positions. Had too much being held in inventory for years.

    Advice to Management

Treat all employees fairly. Favoritism was everywhere. As management changed the existing employees were treated worse than the employees they brought in with them.

    Pros

Good managers low-level managers who were friendly. Lots of great deals on clearance appliances.

    Cons

Upper management didn't take their website seriously and lost a lot of money by not hiring the right people to run it.

    Advice to Management

Invest in a bigger technology department and streamline your outdated processes.
