I worked at Stanley Electric U.S. Co., Inc. full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

30+ years with no layoff of full time employees. Stable place to work with competitive benefits.

    Cons

Not a good understanding of work and life. The expectation was to always be at work or on call and no separation between work and family.

    Advice to Management

Trust your associates and make decisions quickly, but without haste. Act to make change quicker and develop from within the company.

I worked at Stanley Electric U.S. Co., Inc. full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Quite a few good people on the floor, and a fairly stable job. Hands-on experience and willingness to (half-heartedly) try new things.

    Cons

Average-to-low pay for an entry level engineering position, raises are meager. General coatings department engineering atmosphere is very much a good ole boy system where friends of the coatings manager can do no wrong but everyone else is looked down upon and/or treated poorly. Starting in middle management, every person has their job based on time with the company, not skills or education. Poor decision making starting from the top. Not a diversified company, so plan on slow days & layoffs if Honda slows production.

    Advice to Management

Re-evaluate those who have the ability to make meaningful decisions and replace with qualified management staff. Increase engineering salaries dramatically to be competitive. Decent engineers can easily break into the automotive industry $20k higher than Stanley pays.

    Pros

Excellent place to start career and learn basics of Japanese style manufacturing techniques. Compensation package is generally acceptable, and breadth of manufacturing practices offer an excellent opportunity for learning.

    Cons

Limited long term outlook and opportunity for advancement beyond lowest levels.

    Advice to Management

Change perspective to protect for long term growth.

    Pros

Stable environment tied to a strong Automotive OEM. Benefits and pay are good at starting to moderate experience levels, but flatten out in management and senior management areas. Work environment provides advancement for competent individuals. Most areas have a strong sense of familial spirit. Mid-management looks out for the associates, and activly supports their needs.

    Cons

Company outlook is focused on the immediate financial impact of any activity. Long term objectives are weak and generally not held to throughout their full terms. Objectives tend to be very transient with daily changes in the "top priority" items.

    Advice to Management

Look further to the future and provide clear directives and allow the management team some latitude to achieve those goals.

    Pros

The company hires within. There are a lot of opportunities for lateral moves if you get bored with what you are doing.

    Cons

There is an issue with other workers not caring enough to do a good job, which can drag down the vibe. The company tries to make it nice though.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

They have a lot of great people working there, many with 20 or more years with the company. The company is very committed to serving the customer and making great products.

    Cons

This is a very Japanese company which is run in a very antiquated Japanese style. They are committed to Lifetime employment for fulltime associates so they hire to many temporary"s. They are extremely slow to make strategic decisions and there is no clear direction for the future.

    Advice to Management

Reestablish the corporate culture you had when it was a smaller plant. Set clear goals and hire enough staff to get the work done.
