I worked at Stantec full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent corporate culture, great portfolio, strong social interaction and better diversity than most companies. Enabling employees to pursue what they want. Really excellent healthcare team, by far the best.

    Cons

VOA now Stantec in Chicago is a great company but depending upon the studio you are a part of they struggle with mentor ship. Projects will be passed between 5-6 PM's and lots of details can get lost in the process. People come and go often and those who stay are not the best or brightest.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Stantec full-time

    Pros

Support services of a modern company (IT/data/conferencing). Good co-workers, and management. Projects are engaging and exciting.

    Cons

Due to acquisition business model, the company acts like a bunch of small companies under one umbrella at times. There are some overall corporate requirements for HR, safety, etc. but technical resources appear to be left up to the individual branches to figure out on their own sometimes. Centralized design practices could optimize production and also ensure proper technical knowledge is being applied correctly to projects.

    Advice to Management

Educate the entry level and mid level staff on how the company functions, often those people are left in the dark on how some management decisions are made or resources that are available to them.

While utilization is important to being a profitable company lower staff feel the pressure to keep their utilization up and are not encouraged to attend seminars or training on company time as this isn't billable. This leads some staff to avoid the subject completely. When you know the answer is most likely no, you're not going to ask.

I have been working at Stantec as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

As a landscape architecture intern, working at Stantec provided me with immense opportunity to experience a variety of roles common to the design field. Tasks included creating 3D models, producing renderings, diagrams, site plans, and presentations, site visits and site analysis, creating and editing CAD details, and primary design work. There were opportunities to engage in the design process from schematic design to construction documents, and the office is busy, so there were lots of projects in progress which meant there was always work available. I was pleasantly surprised by the percentage of time I spent working on actual client projects. While there were plenty of late nights and stressful deadlines, compared to previous internships I've held, the work-life balance was more manageable, enabling me to explore New York City with my colleagues on weekends and many evenings (I am not from the NYC metro).

    Cons

Being such a large company, some processes seem overly cumbersome.

    Advice to Management

Find more creative ways to encourage inter-departmental interaction.
