I worked at Stantec (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Used to be a good company to work for.

    Cons

Hired as a full time employee, but treated like a contractor. If they don’t have a job to send you to, which is often, you don’t get paid. Also, no incentives for being a long term, reliable employee.

    Advice to Management

Inform prospective employees that they will only be paid if you can keep them busy.

I worked at Stantec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large enough firm with capital to develop good documentation and BIM standards. Company has enough money through its conglomerate structure that employees can sit idle without any incoming projects and still collect a paychecks. Location is very convenient for commuting.

    Cons

It would be intuitive to think that an AE company would naturally result in synergies among disciplines. Due to the fragmented and uninvolved roles of leadership- synergies between departments do not exist. Internal coordination is extremely lacking. Leadership is not consistent and are not good communicators. Another plutocrat comprised of uninspired and uncreative designers engineers/architects/interior designers alike. Those who are talented are sucked in a vacuum by the overly inflated egos of "upper management". Career opportunities is constrained by unprogressive sexist/racist culture breed by men and women alike. If you are interested in avoiding hierarchical/traditional workplace, this is not the place for you. If you are interested in merit based opportunities, this is not the place for you. If you aren't interested in seeing a MAGA sign displayed in a glass front office of a principal at your workplace, steer clear of here.

    Advice to Management

Don't be so arrogant and absorb constructive feedback. Live your marketed value "designing with community in mind", a good place to apply and start is in your very own workplace.

I have been working at Stantec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people, competitive benefits and salaries, many opportunities! I joined through an acquisition and it was a GREAT outcome.

There are endless opportunities for training, learning, and growing.

They practice what they preach and have a great safety culture.

    Cons

Big company, 22,000+ employees, which means there is some level of bureaucracy that some candidates may find challenging.

The acquisition was painful and could have been disastrous due to communication from Stantec through the acquired company management. In hindsight it was the management of the acquired company that was the problem.

    Advice to Management

As with any job, your supervisor will make or break the quality of your experience. Place people with balanced hard and soft skills in those managerial rolls. Just because someone has extraordinary technical skills in no way means they can or should manage a team.
