I have been working at Staples full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very few are inspired to work excessive hours, so the work-life balance was nice.
Shira is bringing new life and energy to the company, but it doesn't seem to penetrate past Senior Management.

    Cons

    Pay is lower than competitors.
Constant reorganizations, layoffs, and rehiring because "Do it quickly" wins over "Do it right"
Locally, there are very few career opportunities for growth.
Company has a reimbursement program for degree programs, but offers little to no training to advance skills of current employees.
There was no chance for merit increases last year and the flat raise was less than inflation. The only chance to stay ahead is move jobs (within or outside the company).

    Advice to Management

Remember, you're only as great as your employees.

I have been working at Staples part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good job for people entering the workforce. Easy to manage this job plus school because of flexible availability. Job is not very difficult and expectations are low.

    Cons

Management is very unprofessional. Schedules change mid-week with no warning or alerts. In over two years I've received a total of 45 cents in raises (while consistently being in top 2 for most sales) and moving up within the company is difficult because must upper management jobs are outsourced. The brick & mortar stores are always understaffed so customers consistently unsatisfied with help and take it out on associates who have nothing to do with staffing. They will constantly add to the scope of your job and tasks you're responsible for without increasing compensation.

    Advice to Management

Stop job condensing. I shouldn't make less than a dollar more than an employee who is newly hired in the same department after being with the company for more than two years.

Need to get store level management under control. They are either extremely unprofessional or totally clueless, and consistently blame things on corporate.

I worked at Staples part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people. My former coworkers were really kind and helped each other out because of the very poor management.

    Cons

I was promised 6 raises and received 1 after my year there, after switching between Office Supplies and Easy Tech.
Took and passed over 40 hours of certifications that proved to be a waste of time.
Managers spread shifts thin, don't always allow for breaks, and get angry when you request time off with more than a months notice.
Force sales to impose protection/add-on plans to furniture/tech to the point where people would leave the cart where it was and exit the store, extremely annoyed. We needed to listen to the management on these "requests" because most of us were in school full time and couldn't afford to lose our jobs.

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing on your paychecks and yearly bonuses and make sure your employees are working in a civil and moral working environment.

    Cons

    Not enough hours
Inexperienced workers - not enough training to handle all situations

    Advice to Management

More training, and benefits for outstanding work
