Truly the ideal place for young professionals in the media community

Apr 23, 2021 - Supervisor in Chicago, IL

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Tons of industry perks, especially in Chicago. I barely had to buy groceries because I was going to events or would take leftovers from meetings or was taken out to eat by vendors. Great people, relatively young coworkers that were in the same life stage as you. There's an established pipeline of promotions and rotations that will help you work your way up through the company if you do well (hard work still required of course) If you're on a less than ideal team, you'll be moved off most likely within a year of two so it won't last and there will always be a better team in your future. Great benefits, 2021 they moved to an unlimited vacation which we'll see how that plays out. Remember that you have a life outside work and make that known on your team and work/life balance should be easily acquired.

    Cons

I wish they had more US office locations with better climates. They are a few difficult teams, but you eventually move off, so if you can stick it out, it's worth it. Entry level pay isn't the greatest, but as you move up it gets a lot better.

Toxic Culture - I won't be staying here

Dec 3, 2018 - Strategy Associate in Los Angeles, CA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Free food and coffee Good exposure to clients and see all sides of business

    Cons

I really did not know what I was getting myself into. The application/interview process was vague to start off with and no one knows their brand or team assignments until 9am on the first day. -As soon as I was given more responsibility, I was spread too thin with too little knowledge of what I was actually doing -Some people don't know how to manage - it really shows as soon as one thing goes awry -Entry levels are adhered to strict hours (9-5) which is good for work life balance but not good when there is more work than time given. It ends up being more stressful - It takes too long to be promoted and for almost no extra compensation or responsibility. Senior associates do the same exact thing as associates except they get more time to do it -Last but not least, this place is toxic beyond belief. People should not be crying at their desks or in the bathroom because of stress or anxiety about work.

Your experience at SMG depends on which account you are placed

Mar 30, 2012 - Media Associate in Chicago, IL
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

A lot of vacation days/paid time off, fun perks to the job.

    Cons

Your experience can really depend on which account you are placed on. If you are on a good account you will be able to leave at 5 every day and have a good work/life balance. If you're on a bad account you will be working late nights regularly.

    Pros

Good experience in media planning and buying Opportunities to work globally Teams are working on innovative projects with household name clients.

    Cons

Some Account Directors do not have the skills necessary to manage and develop teams and the Managers and Executives suffer for this. Long hours are expected and work / life balance is not respected

    Great Media Agency

Sep 7, 2010 -  in New York, NY
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

There are multiple opportunities average for promotions and rotations onto other accounts, as there are a wide range of high profile accounts to work on. There is good communication throughout the agency as opposed to other media agencies. Strong focus on the review process. Widely respected agency.

    Cons

Poor middle-level management on certain accounts. Work/life balance not regarded as important by individual teams while HR may try to focus on it. Better team organization and structure needed for some accounts. High turnover which results in higher stress levels.

Lots of work, lots of play

Mar 13, 2014 - Media Supervisor in Chicago, IL
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

If you're in activation (aka "Deliver") you get lots of interaction with the sales community meaning fun parties, outings, and gifts from vendors. Great 1st job out of college - you will learn a lot from the training programs Starcom offers TONs of vacation time and "unlimited" sick days

    Cons

Always understaffed - no matter what team - so be prepared to work a lot of long hours and not have a good work/life balance. You might work 60+ hours a week, and maybe some time on the weekends. Compared to other agencies the pay isn't great (especially since the hours suck) Team management is hit or miss - some are great and know the entire team by name and some you rarely see around the office
