I worked at Starr Companies (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are no pro's to this company. Obviously I would have hoped for some direction for the team but everytime on the weekly calls had opinions from the field that were squelched before they ever started. Meaning that nothing would be possible and constructive. Therefore more of a dictator approach where nobody with any smarts would entertain an opportunity to work there.

    Cons

Senior management is crash and burn. Your lucky to make it three years there. Absolutely no forward thinking nor any type of product development which makes it impossible to compete in the marketplace.

    Advice to Management

Drop the focus buying reinsurance on everything as the reinsurance marketplace will not support Starr on many of its requests as many of your underwriters have no idea how to present deals to them and of course this is another knee jerk reaction that takes away from some of the talented underwriters that still may be there and offer good solid decision making without laying it off. Reinsurance is a good mechanism to protect the balance sheet but to protect it completely is not; the way to go.

    Pros

I can not really recall and positives that are a call out.

    Cons

Criminals at the helm. Not concerned about doing things right. Just doing things. Mafia mentality and incompetence exudes management at all levels. Loyalty to Hank is all that matters. No heir apparent.

    Advice to Management

Get a new CEO and management team in to drive and innovate. This is 2016 not 1990.

    Pros

Business casual dress code. Philadelphia office had a convenient location.

    Cons

Management of department was short sighted, lacked basic industry knowledge, lacked management skills, focused exclusively on quantity to the detriment of quality.

    Advice to Management

Train your mid level managers and stop promoting people just because they know someone.

    Cons

Little respect for people, no overall strategy just premium target, no hr, no future for young people. You have to be Greenberg's friend to be someone.

    Advice to Management

Manage people based on 21st century policies and standards. This ain't AIG!!

I have been working at Starr Companies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you need a job, that's the only pro. Some good people.

    Cons

Leadership is the absolute pits, however, they all walk around giving each other high fives because they think they are the greatest. Old school mentality, no woman in leader roles, no real room to move up unless your related to a Sr leader. Good people don't last long bc they get fed up with the insanity. Managers are rude, obnoxious and unprofessional. They don't practice what they preach. There is no accountability for their actions. HR is a mess. There are no real practices in place. Technology is non existent, you might as well have a chisel and hammer. You have at leaders in custom suits getting free lunch everyday and assistants barely able to afford commuting to NYC. Definitely no perks for employees. You can't work from home.

    Advice to Management

    Get new managers

    Pros

Located in upper midtown Manhattan which is commutable by train or bus. Very good salary and health/ dental insurance benefits.

    Cons

Hank Greenberg is the CEO and looking to sue the US Government for $50 Billion. Greenberg and his co-defendant, former AIG Chief Financial Officer Howard Smith, currently face a decade-old lawsuit which they are accused of orchestrating sham transactions at AIG. These lawsuits do not promote the company's credibility.

    Advice to Management

Hire a new CEO and restructure the small private company so that business can continue without the negative publicity and provide better company budget to succeed.

    Pros

The talent pool is lacking, if you have a point 4 IQ you will be ahead of the curve. There really are no Pros.

    Cons

Where to begin....Management is absolutely horrible. Starr seems to only hire incompetent people. No one is held accountable for anything. HR is a complete disaster. The talented people do not stay long. A lot of old men walking around doing nothing except talking about how great they are and waiting for the dining hall to open. No succession plan. No flex working hours. Completely old fashion, they do not want to grow with the times. No investment in training. Forced to share office space which created a bed bug issue. Not a nice place, everyone is miserable.

    Advice to Management

Wake up and get with the times. Hire a consulting firm to come in and clean house.

I worked at Starr Companies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive salary, good medical and dental benefits. Good opportunities to learn about the insurance industry.

    Cons

Where shall I begin? This company is a mess, and to say that it's toxic is being kind.

As many have mentioned, Starr has serious issues with its managent and its HR department. There is a severe lack of communication, and no protocol in place. It's gut wrenching seeing many who work hard and do what they need to do to save money out of respect for their employer, to be threatened and even terminated without cause. Many underwriters, adjusters, and staff receive little to no bonus, however many in management travel like rock stars and abuse expenses. There is absolutely no support for mid management and support staff either. Very little opportunity for development and growth, and no recognition for hard work.

Starr did start off on the right foot, but this company is now a shell of what it used to be. There is also far too much loyalty to ex-longtime AIG employees, despite that some of these employees lack the skill set needed for this century. HR especially needs to take note about labor law abuses in some of the departments. Some staff work through lunch daily, and are denied vacation requests. I know some staff can't even take off when they are sick. HR needs to step up and ensure the laws are followed, and stop catering to unreasonable people's demands (who are unfortunately in management!)

    Advice to Management

Not sure how this company can be fixed--executive management is a big part of the problem.
