    Pros

    Good pay and paid parking.

    Cons

The higher your pay is the the greater your workload is. No formal training. if you are smart enough to negotiate a higher pay rate for yourself it is automatically assumed that you would not require or need any training. The overall environment is very clicky... Underwriters are very quick to throw an assistant or an analyst under the bus to home office or upper Senior Management. Too much nonsensical over documentation of files, checklist for checklist for checklists. Very much a do-as-i-say-not-as-i-do environment.

    Advice to Management

Stop coming up with more ways to waste time. Invest in going completely paperless over all departments. Invest time in cultivating a culture that shows you really care about your employees starting from the technical assistance up. Stop spending so much time focusing on what everybody is doing wrong, encourage and support those that are doing something right! Crackdown on management that leads by intimidation instead of by example.

I worked at Starr Companies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company fully funded pension plan. Overtime was minimal and paid overtime for non exempt employees including time and a half over 40 hours.

    Cons

The internal review program not tied to compensation decisions and wasn't streamlined so performance rating was at least partially dependent on the reviewer

    Advice to Management

Need to Improve the internal review program and compensation planning in order to keep high performers.

I worked at Starr Companies full-time

    Pros

    Good benefits and friendly co-workers

    Cons

No defined career path, expected to be available 24/7, tyrant owner, everyone is expendable mentality, management by fear, expected to put company ahead of family, makes you feel guilty taking a vacation and under staffing...

    Advice to Management

Reduce staff workload and encourage (not lip service) life outside of the Starr empire

I worked at Starr Companies as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

-decent pay.. 20$/ hr for interns.. good opp for uni. students looking to put something on the resume
-nice intern program over the summer to interface with other interns and build a network
-some nice people through out the company

    Cons

-I had a really reactive, not proactive, boss that was not a good manager (stinks that this is my perspective/experience).. I had to constantly follow up on projects
-work didn't feel challenging and work was not valued
-coworkers very closed off and I didn't feel supported.. or feel comfortable to ask questions without getting hesitance to help..
-needs more room for growth and professional development
-not sure if this is a con.. yet question of ethicality for company.. almost every other person I was around was related to someone in the company.. strange phenomenon.

    Advice to Management

Empower your employees and give them challenges. As for those in management, be willing to listen, explain concepts to lower level employees, support them, and work with your employees on projects and also in professional development. Be more proactive and engaged with your core group of employees

    Pros

    Salaries are above general market.
Ok to use as a stepping stone to other opportunities.
Not a lot of micro-managing, nice culture in field offices.

    Cons

Little appreciation for their employees. Company is run like it is 1950.
    Male dominated upper management.
Try to run the business by making their employees fearful.

    Advice to Management

Enter this decade. Old school management.

I worked at Starr Companies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Stable well funded company. Fair pay and benefits packages

    Cons

Back end shared services cannot support the business growth. Do not go there expecting that IT, HR, Legal, Finance, Credit, Audit, and Claims departments have proper funding and expertise to support the underwriting side of the house. Document and follow up in writing on EVERYTHING!!
Politics and drama rule this place.

    Advice to Management

Build shared services support groups that have accountability to the underwriting managers and you'll see higher employee satisfaction and retention rates along with higher productivity and growth.
