I have been working at Starwood Hotels & Resorts full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Starwood is in some ways bizarre. While being a Fortune 500 company with over 150.000 employees, it feels like a star-up company, with everyone trying to contribute to its success. Starwood has developed a management culture that fosters innovation and trying out things. Is it perfect? Definitely not. (see cons). However, the more I experience other companies and their culture, the more I value Starwood's company culture. It's worth a lot more than pay and pay isn't bad (average, I would say).

    Cons

The Human Resources function in this company is poorly developed. While this can vary by hotel or office, the former global HR leadership has been detrimental to the otherwise positive culture of the company (which is not shaped by HR, fortunately). Complex hiring process, lack of initiative and many other aspects have disappointed me on more than one occasion. Once, I even only found out my new salary (internal promotion) by looking at my pay-check. Way to go, HR!

    Advice to Management

Advice seems redundant, as Starwood has been acquired by Marriott. To the Marriott HR leadership I would recommend: learn from the culture, try to understand where the entrepreneurial spirit came from (which is underdeveloped in Marriott from what can be observed), and try and contribute the HR process and leadership in Marriott that the company is so famous for.

Over 14 years I moved from a part time desk clerk, during college, to a assisting part of the Executive Team in Stamford CT and NYC.

I have been working at Starwood Hotels & Resorts full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great company, great brands, great on property staff.

    Cons

    1) too much money spent on projects that don't generate the required ROI.

    2) I work at corporate and the politics across teams is disgraceful. It is the absolute worst I have seen in any organization across my career. Our current CIO has not created any positive change for the past two years. The CIO prior to her announced his retirement desires two years before he left the CIO role! This empowered the IT leaders (= VPs) to play even more politics and run projects like little spoiled kids. The business leadership was much the same way. Put them together and what do you get? You get a company bought by their rival. KUDOS, IT and Business leadership at Starwood!!

    Advice to Management

look in the mirror > put your ego aside > reflect on how you took ownership to do the greater good, as opposed to playing politics or playing possum. if you can't think of 3 things off the bat, you are being dishonest with yourself and were most likely one of the folks flaming the fires at Starwood.
