I worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Freedom to help guests however you think best, rather than a rigid, micromanaging corporate philosophy. Enjoyable work environment with management that listens. Some flexibility in scheduling. Free employee meals in the employee cafeteria.

    Cons

Seldom get invited to employee appreciation events, because you're still working the bar. Tips vary wildly depending on who's in the hotel at the time, it's feast or famine. Summer months are going to be thin, as the hotel will be fairly empty. Extremely busy nights could see you working a 14 hour shift, but your tips will make up for it.

    Advice to Management

For every ten complaints from stressed out bar/waitstaff, there's probably one that could be acted upon to create positive change. Ask staff to suggest improvements every so often, the complaints you hear the most often are probably the important ones.

I worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, beautiful atmosphere, scheduling flexibility

    Cons

Bar in need of updating. All items needed to maintain and restock bar are located in far reaches of bar

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees concerns

    Lots of fun
    Lots of work
    Kids were awesome
    Events were fun

    Cons

    Supervisor had no management experience
5+ years experience was not taken into consideration for my hourly wage
Was told I was hired to work part time but would work 40+ hours a week
Supervisor would ask me to clock out so I wouldn't get over time...but still asked me to stick around to help out

    Advice to Management

Please promote those who prove they deserve it, not those who have just been there the longest

I worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, enjoyed working with my co-workers and interacting with guests.

    Cons

Unprofessional management, scheduling against availability and allowing others from different departments to work the shifts (not willing to change schedule), scheduled full time hours, not considering you were hired part time. Approve you for over time from HR without asking if willing to work overtime hours. Overall bad experience with Starwood Hotels & Resorts with management and HR. Have complained and documented every incident and problems have not diminished. Treated poorly after one knows about complaint letter... retaliation at its finest.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your associates and let them know what is going on in the resort, recognize good work, motivate and listen to what we have to say. A professional management team will make happy associates, that will have great customer service, that will result with happy guests and profits.

I worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I did not have to deal with my direct superviser everyday.

    Cons

    There was never any help.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to do your job before you try and tell me how to do mine

    Pros

Good team work. Good business model and company philosophy. Supportive management staff.
Opportunity for growth and advancement. Always a fun atmosphere.

    Cons

Didn't like the dress code uniforms required by management. Perhaps they could have asked for input from the servers. Not given opportunity to taste test menue items to be more prepared in customer service.

    Advice to Management

More input from front line employees to improve performance and presentation. Too frequent change of management personnel, making changes in procedures.
