I have been working at State of California Office of Statewide Health Planning full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The staff really does work together as a team! The atmosphere is positive and the work we do is important for keeping Californians healthy and safe.

    Cons

Nothing that isn't a problem at most state offices -- budget issues, sometimes convoluted bureaucracy

    Advice to Management

MORE TRAINING. And more funds for training!

I worked at State of California Office of Statewide Health Planning full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of training opportunities, especially cross training. Free online training for IT certifications including the CAPM, PMP, and BA.

    Cons

Inherently political. If you work faster and better than you co-workers, or boss, you will end up isolated and harassed. Poor leadership.

    Advice to Management

Give people room to grow, and protect your employees from management.

I have been working at State of California Office of Statewide Health Planning full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Supportive management, many promotional opportunities through the state, excellent benefits, reasonably relaxed work environment, good location downtown, very fair hiring/promotion process

    Cons

Can be a boring place to work, little promotional opportunity within the department, sometimes strict rules, moving to Natomas soon, very high turnover rate

    Advice to Management

Hire fewer overqualified candidates to keep good employees from promoting out of the department so quickly. Allow people to telecommute or very flexible schedules.

I have been working at State of California Office of Statewide Health Planning full-time

    Pros

goals, mission, purpose. I think that the work we do is important and our programs haved helped many.

    Cons

Being friendly to the managers is your ticket to getting promoted and most of the time, there are more qualified people. Experience and reliability does not count for much these days. They hire young people right out of college with no experience. They promote people who use foul language daily and who are never talked to. I tried to say something once to the manager when this one person was so loud for over an hour. What I was told, they have been dealing with a system that is frustrating and needed to blow off steam. This is a paraphrase. I would never act like that but then I am not the manager's pet.

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes to the people you hire.

I have been working at State of California Office of Statewide Health Planning part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are many needy clients and they are able to stay in their homes because of this service; it saves the State of California a lot of money in opposition to the client being placed in a nursing facility.

    Cons

The Homecare workers are not paid nearly enough for the work they do

    Advice to Management

I can't really address anything direct to management, the salary that is set between Union and the City is always bargained for. There is lots of work that needs to be done in this area.
