I have been working at State of Colorado Department of Public Safety full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Health benefits are good and you do get several holidays off. Great IT Staff who can fix all computer problems

    Cons

Pay is well below average (10-15k)
Lots of micromanaging and too many people in management positions with no management skills
More emphasis put on work than on home life
High turnover and poor employee retention
    Way too many meetings
    Little to No employee recognition
    Promotion opportunities non existent
    Very poor PTO accruals
    Difficultly in using any PTO

    Advice to Management

Employees need to feel valued. Management is too entrenched in how things have always been done instead of looking at new innovations and ways of doing things. High Turnover rate of great employees is unacceptable. Don’t promote people who don’t deserve it.

I have been working at State of Colorado Department of Public Safety full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Relatively good amount of creative freedom for a government job. The Department does important work around the State in terms of Emergency Management and planning. Interesting to get exposed to so many new things.

    Cons

Tends to be a bit macho. Like with most governments, some of the senior leadership are entrenched and have been there a very long time and are not used to new ideas.

    Advice to Management

Trust the employees a bit more, especially those who are going out into the field and have important field information. Be open to new ideas in the changing times. Don't be afraid to be a little bit more innovative.
