    Pros

Builds skills and experience, so a great position to start with. Supervisors in my experience have been great and there is a concerted effort to support family first.

    Cons

The salary itself is far less than what it should be; however, overall benefits package is pretty good, when considering insurance, vacation/sick time, pension, tuition reimbursement, etc.

People Serving the Public with Pride...Plus Possible Pain Points

    Feb 15, 2022 - Public Programs
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Very affordable comprehensive health insurance (I can only speak for someone with no dependents but have not heard complaints from couples). 12 days of annual leave per year and 12 days of sick leave per year. Personal holiday. Good selection of paid state holidays from summer to winter. Good career progression depending upon your qualifications; there are many departments to choose from, similar to multi-business corporations, while accumulating retirement. You get to live in Florida; location is indeed a benefit. Challenging work with a greater purpose can be fulfilling. Veterans and persons recognized as having disabilities can get preference in hiring. The HR software is great and accessing documents is typically pain-free.

    Cons

Pay scales that are not often at parity with civilian organizations. Some programmatic issues. Implementing a state program can eventually become an inefficient process. Pressures from various levels and sources can slow the progress of needed changes and result in an uncomfortable state of external success with internal discord. Programs must justify their existence, so major changes get pushed back to maintain the program. This is a potential side effect of any bureaucracy, and has not historically been the norm to this extent. COVID-19 has without question changed the trajectory, but it takes persistence to implement persistent change. Experience can vary greatly by department, bureau, and in some cases, office/building.
