I have been working at State of Florida full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Insurance, work from home sometimes.

    Cons

No State Retirement, No PTO, No job security, OPS positions in State of Florida last years and are not temp like designed, so essentially you are doing the same work as Career Service position, just not the pay. The State does not pay into your social security. 3 percent of your pay goes into a required retirement system. When the Govenor changes your entire department will change. It's hard to have a vision for the department and work towards it. Constant putting out of fires due to not enough staff.

    Advice to Management

Look at your OPS positions and if the person is being used 5 years or more consider the position may not be temp as designed.

    Cons

Not many, just keep your head down, come to work, do your job correctly, have a good attitude, don't call out.

I have been working at State of Florida full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are okay, but not as good since 2011 when Rick Scott approved cuts to retirements plans. IMO, this has led to serious issues with retention.

    Cons

Salary compression - In my agency, new employees have been receiving competitive salaries and substantial increases during the first three or four years of employment. However, senior employees have been left out which has led to salary compression. Consequently, retention has been an issue as the younger employees see no future with the state and leave for higher salaries after two or three years. This is leading to a lack of historical knowledge on what we do and why we do it. Not good for the citizens of this state.
    Cuts to benefits.
Lack of cost of living adjustments for numerous years.
    Morale is very low.
Very difficult to recruit good employees and even harder to retain.
Lack of support from Tallahassee senior management, legislature, and governor.

    Advice to Management

Raise salaries for senior, long-term employees, not just the new employees.
Ask senior employees, supervisors and managers for input.
