I worked at State of Louisiana full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Health benefits are good, pension is excellent, vacation/sick leave is generous, lots of holidays.
You will get time off with major emergencies such as extreme weather events.
Pay can be decent once you've stuck it out for a few years and gotten a couple promotions.
Most agencies are family friendly and offer flexible schedules.

    Cons

Few (if any) cost of living raises, and this will go on for years at a time.
Huge pay differences between staff and management.
Constant threat of layoffs at some agencies, no money in budget for any professional perks.
Some of the worst, most overpaid supervisors and managers known to mankind. Many people get promoted for all the wrong reasons. Lots of micro managers and people who simply let power go to their head.
Some agencies are very rigid and inflexible with time leading to low morale and an oppressive workplace culture.

    Advice to Management

Treat people like you would want to be treated and this will solve 75% of the issues.
Set an example for your employees. Follow the rules and this will earn you respect.

    Pros

The work we do as state employees is valuable to our fellow citizens. Pride in service. Part of a great team.

    Cons

Being that this is a state position, politics is at play. Many leadership positions are filled by less than qualified personnel.

    Advice to Management

You have many dedicated people in your organization who are willing to what it takes. Please adhere to state ethics standards. This will aid in morale and workplace climate.

    Pros

Great health benefits and meeting new people.

    Cons

Very low pay, unfair work duties (if you have not been there for years and years) you will not be treated fairly. The employees that's been there the longest does little to no work. You will have to take on majority of your job and everyone else's as well.
