I worked at State of Maryland State Retirement System full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good State benefits: Health, vacation, sick, etc. May be able to transfer easily to another job within the state.

    Cons

Too much work in Benefits department. The processes are outdated and work experience will not transfer out to a lot of other jobs. No thinking and no recognition of effort and hard work. Some mandatory weekend work is required. Be careful because the job titles at recruitment will throw you off. You will not be doing the work of a regular accountant but stuff that will keep you outdated and make it harder to find... something else because you spent years working at a job with the title of an Accountant, but you did NO accounting work. I was able to finally leave but it was difficult. All other positions in this department work long hours plus weekends. They do not train and the office culture there is mostly cold especially from the managers.

    Advice to Management

Training is important and too much work will keep people unhappy.
