    Pros

Very secure employment compared to other IT jobs in the private sector. It is a very large organization so you have plenty of opportunites to move to different positions. The benefits are very good, plenty of vacation and sick time. The salary is very good for the Lansing area and there is on-call pay plus overtime so there is no incentive to work one employee 70 or 80 hours a week. Since the IT department for the state is centralized you get a good chance to work in a very large IT infrastructure so you get to experience a very complex environment. You get to leave your work at work when you go home, it is a very low stress environment.

    Cons

Very laxed time management, many employees show up late very often. This causes the employees that show up on time to received more of the workload. There is very little reward that your manager can give you for doing your job well and very little corrective action that they can take to get employees to improve. All employees get the same pay and step increases regardless of their performance. Due to the low employee turnover rate, there is very little documentation left by employees so if you take over new systems you have a difficult time figuring out how they work. Lots of very old legacy systems to support adds to the problem with lack of documentation.

    Advice to Management

Try to create and environment where hard work and learning are rewarded.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at State of Michigan - DIT part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Its a great opportunity to get experience in IT-in my case I needed on the job experience with application development. You get to see a lot of potential career paths and the hours are extremely flexible.

    Cons

Students are treated somewhat as less of employees. You also cannot work over 129 hours a month-this includes months where there are 31 days. You do the same work as regular employees but get paid far less. Obviously no benefits or holiday pay of any kind.

    Advice to Management

The management in my experience is fine, however they could be a little more aggressive trying to turn students into actual employees.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at State of Michigan - DIT full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great co-workers and management
    Flexible hours
    Challenging work

    Cons

    Limited training opportunities
    Partial tuition reimbursement program

    Advice to Management

Offer more training opportunities to employees. It is unfair that we have to pay out of pocket for training when we make less than what is paid in the private industry for the same job.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

I set my own hours and I had a lot of down time to do my homework, read, and do a lot of things that I wanted. Low supervision and allowed me to help around the office.

    Cons

Little supervision with little responsibility. I would ask for work to do but would get very few assignments. They expected me to initiate my own work/projects, but I never knew where to really fit in to the office.

    Advice to Management

Have a more defined role designed for the worker. Introduce him/her to the rest of the office.

Stable but NOT the 'golden ticket' it used to be.

    Cons

Inconsistent from working in Lansing to Warren, MI. Things 'get done' in Lansing where in Warren they're over worked.
