    Positive Outlook

I worked at State of Michigan - DNR part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Relaxed and stress free environment. Very small teams, everyone at work knows each other well. Get to be outdoors at parks all the time. Very diverse work tasks. Small pay raises every season you return for work. Good place to get in if you want to be a Park Officer.

    Cons

-The park often requires workers from morning into the late evening (~11pm) -You do clean bathrooms and such and the public does find ways to make quite a mess.

    Advice to Management

Don't let certain people hold certain jobs tasks. Every short term worker should be cutting grass, cleaning bathrooms, selling park passes. Don't have one or two people somehow never cut grass or do the slightly more laborious work.

    • "Wonderful - Dangerous - Underappreciated"

        Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at State of Michigan - DNR

        Pros

You work in some of the most beautiful places in Michigan. Many co-workers are fantastic. All uniforms purchased by State.

        Cons

Don't give adequate training for many of the intense and dangerous situations you will be put in - you will arrest for felonies without a gun. Not at all understanding of a woman building a family - sexism rampant. No incentive for being excellent at your job - length of season completly based on seniority. Seasonal job - better make your weak pay STRETCH.

        Negative Outlook

I worked at State of Michigan - DNR

        Pros

The mission a vision of the company are thoughtful and well meaning. Some of the employees were genuinely good workers and pleasant to be around. Most people generally appeared professional

        Cons

The culture attempts to be Christ-centered but fails miserably. Most employees speak negatively about each others work. Management says that they will attempt to do things but conveniently never get around to it. Upper management makes negative comments, and gives others the impression that they are more important than the workers on the floor. Upper management refuses to get their hands dirty in the day to day processes...

        Advice to Management

As a Christ-centered company it would be nice to see the management try out servant leadership rather than the top-down approach.

Former Employee - SW4 Summer Ranger in Grand Haven, MI

I worked at State of Michigan - DNR

          Pros

Looks good on a resume Full time work Work with people Work can get exciting some days when it is busy Work on Different Projects

          Cons

More of a summer type job Can get repetitive some times Strict on how long your lunch and break is

          Advice to Management

I would advise management to work more with their lower level employees. Get in there with them and do some of the dirty work. You are not as busy as you think most of the time.
