I have been working at State of Mississippi full-time

    Pros

Working for the State provides a flexible schedule depending on the position you are in. The benefits get better the longer you work for state.

    Cons

The pay is generally very low compared to the private sector. Health benefits are ok but they do not offer a 401k and instead offer a lifetime retirement benefit through PERS.

I worked at State of Mississippi (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits including Blue Cross/Blue Shield Insurance, personal and medical leave accumulation based on years of service, ability to use leave if time is needed to be off, education benchmark increases and employee track raises depending on agency of employment.

    Cons

Salary is lower compared to the private sector, sometimes difficult for advancement depending on agency of employment, no overtime (but can receive compensatory time if working more than 40 hrs. per week)

    Advice to Management

Management should encourage employees to do everything that they can to reach their potential. Training is very important even when staff is limited.

I have been working at State of Mississippi full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I manage direct staff and contract staff in taking care of the agency facility five buildings and grounds. I can plan my day, but usually everyday activities change. So, I have to adjust to the changes. Like some government jobs, some people work harder than others. Some people I work with have that 'it's not my job mentality'. So, it makes my job more challenging. It's mostly a Mon-Fri, 8-5 kind of job. Fair Health Benefits, its the state plan of Legacy employees vs. New employees, with differing premiums. State covers part of the employee insurance, but a good portion of the premium for family coverage comes out of the state employee's pay check. Several paid holidays each year. Don't think you're going to get pay raise. The State Legislature has to authorize the budget each year and they RARELY increase salaries. I've NOT had ANY Pay RAISE in 5 years. You have to work for an entire year 'on a probation' status before attaining a permanent employee status. There is the state employee retirement plan and as far as i know, its a decent plan.

    Cons

You get paid monthly, so learn to budget your money early. The state does have more than there fair share of lazy employees. Each agency typically handles the vision plan and dental plan options for their employees, not always the lowest premiums for state employees, but it is offered for you to choose.
