I worked at State of Nebraska full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are great. The retirement plan is really good, but they take a lot out of your pay for it. I can't say the same for pay. Because there are so many budget cut you hardly ever get raises. The only to get a raise is to apply for a higher job.

    Cons

You have to pay for parking. Parking downtown is expensive. It is $1.00 an hour which is $8.00 a day. It can really add up over the year. Everything that I handed into my supervisor was wrong and when I went back to change it, it was still wrong. I can't read minds.

    Advice to Management

Train your employees to do their job.

I worked at State of Nebraska full-time

    Pros

Flexible Schedule, Good Coworkers, Reasonable Benefits, Excellent work-life balance, Good place to start career (but don't stay too long).

    Cons

The pay is low. There are no bonuses or raises (other than COLA). Professional development is limited to management only. Upper management is clueless. The good ol' boy network dictates who gets promoted and favoritism is rampant. Hard work and technical skills are ignored.

    Advice to Management

Provide professional development for all employees (not just management). People leave for other opportunities due to low pay. Try promoting based on skills/work ethic, not based on who you want to have a beer with on the weekend.

I worked at State of Nebraska full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits are great - especially the 100% retirement account match in which you become fully vested after five years.

    Cons

The pay doesn't begin to compare to similar jobs in the private sector. I think the benefits are supposed to help make up for that.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees as professionals, rather than dysfunctional family members. Hold everyone accountable to the same standards. Compensate qualities such as hard work and loyalty.

I worked at State of Nebraska part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

none because morale is horrible and the management sucked. it was all favoritism and management didn't care about their employees or their concerns

    Cons

management will belittle you, will put a target on your back if they don't like you, favoritism is huge, they will look for any reason to fire you, does not care about union rules, denies union rep when you request one, discriminated against if you have a disability, no team work, all "I", youth counselors don't back up front line staff, front line staff not allowed to drop levels, no point in being a coach

    Advice to Management

quit your favoritism, get on the same page, stop targeting people you don't like and look for the littlest and dumbest things to fire employees over, morale is horrible
