I have been working at State of Nebraska full-time

    Pros

Camaraderie amongst staff can always lighten a load. Good pension plan. If you are just starting out, this would be a good place for you.

    Cons

The constant changing of politicians and leadership of divisions makes it difficult for programs to take root and be effective. There is constant change making it difficult to see the effectiveness of one project before changing and taking the project in a different direction. Some divisions operate smoothly and people enjoy the work and some don't.

    Advice to Management

Trust staff and take their opinions to heart.

    Pros

Great benefits. Vacation and Sick are separate and start growing with year 5 by one day a year. Retirement is matched dollar for dollar up to 5%. You get 12 holidays a year, including Arbor Day and occasionally we get a bonus holiday on Christmas Eve.

    Cons

Does not offer work from home opportunities generally and some departments can be very strict on work hour flexibility. Overtime generally is never approved.

    Pros

The State is a good place to work. Lots of great people and management generally cares about the workforce. Secure job and while benefits aren't what the used to be they are still very good.

Pay is low compared to the private sector. Work can be dull.

    Advice to Management

Move towards rewarding performance rather than seniority.

I worked at State of Nebraska full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

For the first seven years, the job was extremely rewarding and satisfying.

    Cons

Once original boss retired, the office went through a long succession of unqualified or poorly-equipped managers. In the end, the department was a shell of the place in which I first worked. Much needed public programs and services were eliminated; layers of "managers" were added, sometimes to supervise one other person (for the sake of paying them higher wages). Few people seemed to truly understand the department's goals/mission because there seems to be no goals or mission. Department employees were charged with conducting outside training when internally, no training was even offered to/for them.

    Advice to Management

Hire competent, well-trained people who care about the department, its goals, mission and work, as well as fellow employees. Open up/promote communications channels. Reduce/eliminate gossip, pettiness and back-biting. Let those professionals who are hired do their jobs without micromanaging and stepping in to make changes only for the sake of making yourselves (managers) look better/feel more important.
