Don’t do it
Jan 21, 2023 - Family Services Specialist II in Reno, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good coworkers. Not much else.
Cons
Low pay, poor benefits, high deduction for PERS, no longevity bonus anymore, limited work-from-home opportunities, managers/supervisors often don't care and are not helpful. Promotions are based on friend/family connections, not based on knowledge and skills. Supervisors/manager will often bully certain employees and block job opportunities just because they don't personally like them. Middle school mentality encouraged by management. Ineffective, inefficient, and redundant business practices.

Pros
The location I work at has great co-workers that will assist you. They are very thoughtful and I have never had a question go unanswered.
Cons
Promotions are difficult because it seems they already have a candidate picked out and the posting in a formality.

Conflicting Instructions
May 1, 2021 - Family Services Specialist in Las Vegas, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
If you work for the State a few years then the pay is decent. PERS will eat you alive, but you get used to it after a while.. and when you quit, that can mean $50K+ (less darn taxes). Every three months they're hiring 40-50 people at a time.
Cons
Training included 10 weeks of mostly power points. (Not helpful if you're struggling to stay awake). Try to stay close to the instructor if you're an introvert, because extroverts will interrupt, speak over the instructor and complain. You don't learn anything when you're trying to block them out. And you're really not trained for the real work. Clique-y! Managers don't know anything because when you ask for direction, they ask if you read the manual. Of course you did, but because you're not clear on the interpretation, you ask questions. They'll make you feel stupid and talk to co-workers about it. Extroverts are good at arguing back until they win, but if you're an introvert you'd rather bypass all that drama and get the information to finish the task.
