Pros
Employment with the state of Nevada is stable. I have not seen any layoffs since 2007.
Cons
There are a lot of state employees who don't do their fair share of work since it's nearly impossible to get fired. This is a major con if you are a hard worker, as you will end up doing all the work why your coworkers do nothing, and you'll get paid the same. There is no incentive to do a good job, or rewards for those who do a good job. New governor who was recently elected came in and completely did away with remote work. So people who were previously told their positions were permanent work from home positions, now how to go back to working in the office after making changes in their lives around having permanent work from home positions....all because it was a campaign promise. This goes back to bad employees who will never get fired (and are bad employees even when working in the office), and instead of dealing with that issue, governor is punishing everyone.

Non-competitive pay, frequently/illegally breaks labor law, bad nepotism.

Once you're done with your probationary period, very hard for termination.
Cons
HR department is not an HR department, breaks tons of labor law.

Job Security, cheap insurance, accumulate PTO since day one
Cons
Very hard to move up. No new positions are created so you need to wait for people to die or retire.

Working for the state at least you have job security. Once you pass the 1 year probation that is. 2 weeks vacation per year, major holidays off. That's about it.
Cons
The pay is lower than the private sector or even the county. State employees have been abused by pay cuts and furloughs. Longevity and cost of living increases have been frozen for years. Health benefits have been seriously reduced. Promotions are very "Carson" centric. If you live in Las Vegas most likely you will be screwed with promotions because it always seems someone in Carson gets it. It's happened to me multiple times. Employees that were lower level or been with the state for less were promoted because they do not move positions down to Las Vegas.

Decent place to work
Aug 28, 2012 - IT Professional in Carson City, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Stability is the biggest pro. The jobs aren't going away. Some of the benefits are good, 15 days of annual leave and 15 days of sick leave per year is nice. Middle management is better than upper management.
Cons
Pay is below market. Insurance is getting very expensive and covering less. Morale is low due to these factors. Upper management are political appointees, so the quality varies widely.

Solid, stable employment
Jul 29, 2010 - IT Professional IV in Carson City, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
once probation is complete you have a very solid employment for 20-30 years, above-average retirement/pension & benefits, consistent work, consistent policies & procedures
Cons
low starting pay, dead-weight everywhere, lots of older workforce "running out the clock" to retirement, HR processes are so laborious that most incompetents get to remain in their positions indefinetely

After a while too hard to leave
Jul 29, 2015 - IT Professional in Carson City, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great leave packages, 3+ weeks a year. 11 paid holidays. People are usually great to work with.
Cons
Pay is lower than private sector. 1% raise this year is mainly a joke.
