Supportive work environment, supportive management
Nov 16, 2022 - Management Analyst II in Carson City, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Management is supportive of desire for upward mobility, even if it means taking a job outside of the state system Flex time is very flexible Role is very clear
Cons
Pay is objectively bad. Politically windy.

No shortage of growth opportunities
Oct 6, 2021 - Management Analyst in Carson City, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Structure - Flexible - Work/life balance - Plenty of learning opportunities I started my career in state service -- I've grown so much professionally and personally since then. Governance in a pandemic takes a lot of creativity, resourcefulness and collaboration. It's something I'll carry with me for the rest of my life.
Cons
- Work can be tedious - Middle managers are hit or miss

Good stability (for some employees), absolutely horrendous compensation
Dec 26, 2019 - Management AnalystRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Stable for employees that are not funded through federal grants. If you're funded through federal grants, 100% of the commonly held belief that there is job security with the state is FALSE.
Cons
The compensation is a joke. The equivalent rank with any other local government entity (counties, cities etc.) pays around 40% more. That gap is NEVER going to close, despite the recent legislation permitting collective bargaining, because there are no teeth to it to bring to the legislature. Compensating state employees properly will never be a politically popular decision, and that means it will NEVER happen.

If you can kick a rock and be quiet for 30 years, this is the place for you!

Co-workers are great, no accountability, bankers hours with all holidays off.
Cons
Cronyism is rampant and the great positions are given to undeserving friends of the higher-ups.

State of Nevada
May 23, 2012 - Management Analyst in Carson City, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Security in job, average pay, average benefits.
Cons
No movement upwards, qualifications for positions are very specific and difficult to change positions, government moves slower than Private industry.

Brain dead and clock watchers are rewarded
Apr 7, 2011 - Management AnalystRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Benefits are good. Good place if you wish to work little, but still receive your full pay. Hard to be fired once hired.
Cons
I had six supervisors in eighteen months, and I reported to the division head. Yet, the standard measure for hiring the manager, how long they worked for the state and how well they bent over for the commissioner or department supervisor. Never were they measured on how well they could manage. Not the best system for employees that wish to work hard and be recognized for their efforts.
