Good pay... promoting is a joke

    Pros

I liked the pay and benefits (they were good before ACA at least). Not much good to say, the training was sloppy and surface. They had people who never trained before training, and people who never supervised before supervising, and people who never managed before managing. Sorry, guess thats not a pro

    Cons

As much as they say they promote based on performance and skill, they don't. I watched the new boss's old team get promoted one by one to supervisor until all the sups were the boss's buddies.

    Jul 31, 2018 - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

There was a lot of overtime offered

    Cons

The supervisors were not helpful to new employees, they expected you to know everything with very little training. The pay is awful for what you have to deal with and the type of situations you are put in. You have to work weekends, most likely will never get them off. After a few months you will switch shifts (Day, Swing, Graveyard) You do not get any breaks for lunch

    Pros

Best job I've ever had. As a former Probation Officer in Chicago, working for the State of Nevada was a blast once you learn the ins and outs of the job.

    Cons

No pay raises during statewide freeze That's about it...didn't want to leave but I had personal commitments out of state.

    Vacation Perks over Compensation

    Pros

There are a lot of days off that you can accrue, but the pay is subpar

    Cons

The pay is not that great and if there is any kind of recession or economic trouble you can bet to have hours cut.

    Watch out

Nov 13, 2022 - Parole and Probation Specialist III

    Pros

Flexible schedule and work from home after you've completed your probationary period.

    Cons

My boss at the time was insane to the point she was accusing people of lying on purpose and threatening to fire them over spelling errors. She ended up quitting because all of her subordinates kept quitting due to how terrible of a boss she was. No one stopped her and there were rumors (I was later told about how awful she was). I complained and was given a new position under a new boss. They didn't like me and failed to properly train me or give me any actual work so I was then let go for no reason. Seriously. They gave me no reason. I hate to bring race into it but the officers there were a bit you know, racist. The place is literally being held together by tape. Good luck to anyone who applies and actually works here. Its a nightmare. The sad truth is they have a handful of decent people who work their butts off. I don't know what they're gonna do when they actually get the guts to leave. The pay is not worth it and the treatment is not worth it either. I felt like I was walking on egg shells the entire time I worked there.

    Working with DWSS

Jul 19, 2015 - Family Services Specialist I in Las Vegas, NV
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Work hours are 8 to 5 with an hour lunch. All cases are processed same day which means there is no work left over for the next day. Most clients are fairly nice and almost everyone is a joy to work with. Safe work environment. Time off policy is excellent. You gain 4 hours of sick and another 4 for annual each paycheck. It's easy to take time off.

    Cons

The job takes time to catch on to. There's a lot of information to learn and you can feel like you are not an asset or you may feel like you aren't catching on as quickly as you should. After a year you start to feel better about your position. The pay is not great for the amount of time and skill it takes to do the job. The retirement plan is great but they take 14.5 percent of your check for the first 5 years which takes some adjustments financially. It takes a toll on your finances. They take almost 200 out of each check. But it will be worth it at retirement.
