Understaffed and mediocre pay
Feb 13, 2022 - Engineering in Carson City, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Plenty of vacation time and sick leave
Cons
Trying to find good quality candidates is nearly impossible due to the low pay (compared to cities, counties, and private sector), furloughs, mediocre health insurance, way understaffed, masks masks masks, huge chunk of paycheck goes to PERS, and upper management doesn’t seem to care or be concerned with the downhill direction we’re headed in.

Boring and thankless
Jul 11, 2017 - Anonymous Employee in Carson City, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Job security if you don't mind being treated like a mindless robot.
Cons
Most employees here are just milking time till retirement. Most everyone, even management, does the bare minimum. It is soul sucking, but if you have no hope, desire, or pride, then this place may be for you.

Poor outlook for state employees in Nevada
Apr 19, 2011 - IT Worker in Carson City, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
8-5 job with no weekends. Relatively good job security.
Cons
Employee moraleEmployee moraleEmployee morale is at an all time low. The legislature is more than willing to sacrifice state employees as a scapegoat in the budgeting process. Pay and benefits are getting worse and worse, with no hope of improving any time in the foreseeable future (if ever). Expect medical and retirment benefits to continue to get worse. Lots of middle managers, the majority of whom seems to be promoted from low level admin and techician positions with no real training or leadership qualifications. Incompetent HR. Bureaucratic. Lack of vision or focused goals. Poor quality control. Lots of outsourcing in IT.

Family Services Specialist
Nov 22, 2015 - Family Services Specialist in Las Vegas, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Benefits are decent and the time off is better than most. The people you work with on average are good people who want to do their jobs.
Cons
Most of the state is decent. Welfare was one of the worst jobs I have ever had. One of the supervisors stole the Christmas party fund to buy heroin and the office supervisor told me inappropriate stories while working out. It was an extremely uncomfortable situation.

Working with DWSS
Jul 19, 2015 - Family Services Specialist I in Las Vegas, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Work hours are 8 to 5 with an hour lunch. All cases are processed same day which means there is no work left over for the next day. Most clients are fairly nice and almost everyone is a joy to work with. Safe work environment. Time off policy is excellent. You gain 4 hours of sick and another 4 for annual each paycheck. It's easy to take time off.
Cons
The job takes time to catch on to. There's a lot of information to learn and you can feel like you are not an asset or you may feel like you aren't catching on as quickly as you should. After a year you start to feel better about your position. The pay is not great for the amount of time and skill it takes to do the job. The retirement plan is great but they take 14.5 percent of your check for the first 5 years which takes some adjustments financially. It takes a toll on your finances. They take almost 200 out of each check. But it will be worth it at retirement.
