I have been working at State of North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Pension plan, job could be really interesting and fulfilling if employees were given more freedom and discretion

    Cons

Pay is terrible -nowhere near comparable to similar jobs in private sector-- and raises are not an option (not even cost-of-living adjustments, so employees make less in real dollars every year), micro-management is extreme, and we're constantly understaffed for what we need to do and aren't given the resources we need to do it. It gets to you after a while.

    Advice to Management

Trust the people you hire to be professionals and do their jobs --anything else is condescending and undermines trust. No matter how much of a selling point it may be to not cost the state any money to run this department, underpaying your employees prevents you from getting and keeping talent, and it's ultimately counterproductive. Treat your employees like you value them.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at State of North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The staff was always eager to collaborate, planning foe weekly instruction, and professional development was provided on a monthly basis.

    Cons

There was never enough time during the working week to get things done. Meetings always had to be scheduled after the normal work day, making the average day long and stressful for working mothers and people on tight schedules with family obligations.

    Advice to Management

Created common planning during work hours for staff members.
