I have been working at State of North Carolina (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Co-workers are generally well-intentioned and strictly follow rules.

    Cons

The State cannot retain young, bright and motivated workers so most state workers are simply "putting in their time" until retirement. They are good rule followers but there is no encouragement to think outside the box. Management is old school and change does not come easily - thus most state agencies are well behind the curve when it comes to efficiency, effectiveness and motivation. New HR evalutation and rating systems look good on paper but have not affected any change.

    Advice to Management

Reward good employees and get rid of bad ones. Currently everyone is treated the same so there is no motivation for people to excel and no reason for bad employees to change their behavior.

I have been working at State of North Carolina as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The state has good working hours. You also get to sit down most of the day. They aren't too strict.

    Cons

I would like to have a better work environment. There is a lot of gossip and backstabbing of other employees.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be more rules and not so lenient on workers.
