    Pros

    Benefits package is reasonably good and includes several paid holidays. Work is steady and RIFs/layoffs are rare.

    Cons

    There are no merit-based raises, and you will sometimes receive no raises or COLAs for consecutive years. Quality work performance is secondary to pandering and blind allegiance to unethical and unprofessional practices. As is very often said, "It's not what you know; it's who you know." Gross favoritism is in play. The more you do the more they demand, yet there is no compensation for productivity.

    Advice to Management

    Managers should practice appropriate boundaries: They cannot expect to manage their buddies.

    I have been working at State of North Carolina full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Paid holidays and monthly accrual of sick and annual leave hours immediately upon hire. Paid employee only health insurance premium.

    Cons

    The salaries are ridiculously low in comparison to the same position and work descriptions in corporate America.

    Advice to Management

    Upper management over all is very in touch with life and the circumstances that might arise. Their good is to develop good working relationships.

    I worked at State of North Carolina (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Steady paycheck, fair benefits, M - F schedule.

    Cons

    Turnover is high - low pay for high responsibility. To get anything done - even talking to HR - must be done through layers of management.

    Advice to Management

    Determine why you have such a high turnover in Driver License Examiners. Provide some meaningful supervisory training to low and middle range managers.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

    Flexible schedule; Never a dull moment;

    Cons

    Too many supervisors and not enough workers; overwhelmed with work; job changes every couple of months; no true training when pushed into new responsibilities;

    Advice to Management

    Provide more instruction; answer questions and hire more staff to help so that the few devoted employees left do not leave. An individual is only capable of so much and cannot perform the work of what an entire unit/section used to do. Offer more positive comments and reinforcement.
