Pros
Flexiable schedule, lots of vacation and holiday time off
Cons
Low low pay. Pay is scale only, there is no $$ reward for being a great employee. They never get rid of poor employees. Little room for advancement

Steady but underpaid
Jan 31, 2019 - Business Analyst in Salem, ORRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Steady employment. There's very few ways you can lose your job working for the State. Opportunity to be a servant.
Cons
No merit increases - you're awarded for staying on for another year, not working harder or better. Union over protects - I've witness the Union (SEIU 503) protect people guilty of sexual harassment and workplace violence when in the private sector, they would be fired, let alone poor performance. Comparably low pay - with the exception that you are likely guaranteed to have a job for the rest of your career, something the private sector can't promise, positions, particularly technical-based, are largely underpaid for the same work performed in the private sector. Unless you're planning a major hospital stay, birth, or other massive medical expense you need decent insurance for, the compensation package is lacking. Don't work for the State as a career opportunity. Work for the State because you care about its citizens and want to make a difference.

7 year employee. Held several positions trying to promote & as a result of budget cuts
Nov 2, 2013 - Administrative, Accounting, Accountant in Portland, ORRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great benefits, family friendly, flexible work schedule, able to telecommute for a few years 1 x per week, I have had several awesome mid level Managers! I loved most of my co workers, I had decent trainings offered to me, more so while in Salem.
Cons
Huge difficulty in promotion, friends tend to get promo first, very poor pay, benefits are getting worse as each year passes, my program was relocated from Portland to Salem due to budget cuts, No choice was offered to stay in PDX. 'My position has moved to Salem.' I worked out of class without the pay for a positions duties for years & continued to do so at 2 positions higher duties while transition from PDX to Salem to assist in any way I could. Still ended with almost no recognition & only 5% out of class pay for 5 months. I was asked to work 3 positions out of class shortly after with no out of class as well but landed a lateral transfer back to PDX. I had to apply for State positions as non employee 'open competative' to attain position back in Portland with no assistance or real protocal from the union or HR. Huge economical & family hardship to our family. I had higher expectations & am seeking other employment outside of State as a result of my experience.
