Good benefits. Lags in pay
Feb 13, 2023 - IT Operations Manager in Salem, ORRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good work life balance and usually supportive leaders
Cons
No bonus opportunities and budget is often constrained
- Former Employee★★★★★
Pros
great work environment and co-workers. Collegial environment where everyone is treated with respect. Colleagues collaborate and help each other. Good work life balance.
Cons
long commute to Salem. Carpooling is great, but makes the day even longer. It's a state job so salaries are not the same level as private businesses. But, that is one of the trade offs when working for the State.
- Current Employee, more than 1 year★★★★★
Rewarding work, strong union, great benefits, and decent pay.
Aug 28, 2019 - Research Data AnalystRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Rewarding and meaningful work serving Oregonians. Amazing work life balance - telecommuting options and opportunities to travel around the state. The base salary may be lower than if you take your data analysis talents to Silicon Valley or the financial sector, but the benefits and job security working for the state are unparalleled. And of course it's much easier to go to work knowing you're helping (or at least trying your best to help - see below) fellow citizens, not tracking their consumer habits for targeted advertising.
Cons
Bureaucracies can be slow and idiosyncratic. Not all of the research you do will be used to enact real changes to improve the lives of Oregonians. More often than not it will fall on deaf ears. You have to navigate within the system and keep chipping away at the problems one report or study at a time.

Pros
Work life balance is great.
Cons
Hiring is way too slow, if your unit is understaffed it can take years to dig out of.
- Former Employee, more than 3 years★★★★★
Pros
Coworkers, working with families, never boring.
Cons
Limited work life balance.
- Current Employee, more than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
Depending on the department, there are great training opportunities that either help you work towards career goals or even personal development. Most managers support you in maintaining a good work/life balance.
Cons
Vacancies in some areas leave teams a bit empty. This breakdown can cause projects to stagnate and employees to lose motivation. Maintaining high engagement is largely a personal endeavor.
