I have been working at State of Texas Secretary of State full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Good location (downtown, view of the Capitol, parking is a nightmare), most people are friendly and can be a good community

      Cons

Management doesn't incentivize good employees or punish bad employees (a good deal if you want to slack off), really difficult to be reclassified or get a raise

      Advice to Management

Fight for your good employees, act more like a private business and get rid of people who are bringing down the agency and come up with creative solutions to benefit current employees

I have been working at State of Texas Secretary of State full-time (Less than a year)

      Pros

Plenty of opportunities to advance in other departments. They provide cross training for different departments.

      Cons

Can sometimes be a little overwhelming, but is still rewarding. Training should be a little more organized.

I worked at State of Texas Secretary of State full-time

      Pros

Very prestigious position, generous benefits and get to work downtown Austin.

      Cons

Leadership transitions in and out, leaving little expertise behind. Leadership is learning on the job, making it difficult for them to achieve anything. Insiders are favored while outsiders are unwelcome.

      Advice to Management

      Attend basic personnel management courses.
