I have been working at State of Vermont full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The department of Health has a bunch of great people working there doing great work. If people are hired that is the time to negotiate a higher pay step; once someone is hired raises are very prescribed.

    Cons

There is a lot of red tape being a state entity.

    Advice to Management

Upper management should encourage middle management not to treat workers like they are expendable.

I worked at State of Vermont full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Union support. Great benefits. Relaxed work environment. Casual dress code. Rewarding, important work.

    Cons

Recruitment/HR needs to be more selective, especially considering that pay there is above average. They could do better in attracting a higher caliber talent in both the rank & file workers as well as management.

    Advice to Management

More people in management need to get a better understanding of the function of government, especially where public assistance in concerned. There's not enough 'heart' in management there. For too many, it's just a paycheck. The idea of public service/civil servant is hardly ever inculcated as they onboard new staff, but especially management.

I worked at State of Vermont full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    lots of overtime, great benefits.

    Cons

lots of mandatory overtime, must be able to work 80 hours a week. Seniority based system, don't expect to get a day shift, weekend, or vacation for years. State allows massive abuse of sick leave so facilities are always shorted. System is archaic and needs to adopt modernized models of confinement. Management is poor and works on the popularity system. Lacking consistency on an minute to minute basis. No breaks, not even for bathroom, forget a 15 min break. You will be bullied as a rookie. Temp to hire system so you may never get a full time position unless you are popular.

    Advice to Management

Get it together, act professional, get an education.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at State of Vermont full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

decent salary and benefits, professional co-workers, flexible hours when needed, enjoyable coworkers.
I have only worked there for a year and a half, but I believe there is room for advancement if I choose to advance.

    Cons

State workers in general are looked down on by the general public and generalized as not being efficient workers. This is not the case in the agency where I work. Also the public doesn't always understand that our work is governed by what the legislature votes on. It can be frustrating to speak with an angry person on the phone who is upset over something I have no control over.

    Advice to Management

Since this is a public job, my advice to the law makers who govern what we do is get to know the people who are working for you. Let us tell you what "the people" want.

    Pros

Its a job and you can make a living

    Cons

I gave 30 years to this corrupted agency. I am a male, and if your a female, or a minority watch out. The management from the secretary on down is either female and on a power trip, most are closet racist, and sexual perverts. Corruption runs amuck, if anyone was around during Irene in 2011, they would tell you the millions that was sent to the federal government under FEMA. I should know I purchased a lot of stuff for people that shouldn't have been purchased. Even demanded a letter from the director of purchasing because I was nervous of going to jail since my name was on everything. If your not one of them then your nothing. Spent 30 years there moved up the ladder, unable to make changes.

    Advice to Management

I could privatized the entire state in a year, that is what it needs. Management and employees get paid too well for stuff that doesn't matter.
